General Function

The Day Camp Unit Lead will be responsible for the supervision, implementation, and development of activity plans for a group of children, including assisting in the child’s social, emotional, physical, spiritual, and cognitive development.

Education/Experience/Training/Certifications

• At a minimum, a high school diploma or equivalent is required (18+ years of age)
• Experience working with youth preferred, not required
• Documentation of DHS clearance prior to starting work, and CPR, First Aid, AED, and Child Safe certifications are required within 60 days
• Completion of Blood Borne Pathogens training, Redwoods, and concussion training as required

Job Duties & Responsibilities

• Assists in overall camp management
• Serves as a role model for all youth participating in the day camp program
• Ensures a safe and nurturing environment by attending to the needs of campers at all times
• Assumes equal responsibility for general housekeeping tasks. This includes bagging trash, campsite cleanup, and bus cleanup
• Establishes and maintains a positive relationship with all coworkers, YMCA staff, YMCA members, program participants, and the general public
• Consciously creates a climate in camp to foster the goals and objectives of the YMCA
• Responsible for lesson plan development (weekly) and implementation of the weekly plans with a group of children
• Directly supervises day camp counselors and Jr. counselors, and leads program activities throughout the day
• Performs other assigned duties as directed by the Supervisor

Abilities & Skills

• Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.

• Ability to plan, lead, and participate in all physical activities

• Ability to sit and stand from a seated position on the floor when interacting with children.

• Capability to be outside participating for the majority of the day.  

• Ability to Follow YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical situations and behavior management, child abuse prevention, and emergencies.
