Job Description

The primary responsibility of the Fleet Supervisor will be to oversee fleet management, maintenance, repair and recruitment/management of drivers. Shuttle drivers ensure the safe transportation of passengers to and from the Ralph H. Johnson Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center in Charleston, SC. The Fleet Supervisor will also manage and provide support of all operations at the Ralph H. Johnson VAMC. VetPride Services gives preference on hiring Veterans and Military Personnel.

Location: Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center, 109 Bee St, Charleston, SC 29401

Shift: Full-time, Monday-Friday

Compensation: Commensurate with experience.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee and schedule vehicle inspections, maintenance, and servicing; manage preventative maintenance schedules.
  • Reduce unnecessary expenses and repairs.
  • Secure the fleet’s compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Analyze fleet performance data and improve accordingly.
  • Report fleet performance and finances to upper management.
  • Handle incident response for all fleet issues, accidents, defects related to vehicles, etc.
  • Manage shuttle team of approximately 10 shuttle drivers.
  • Properly schedule shuttle team to stay within contracted hours on weekly basis.
  • Assist in hiring, firing, and disciplinary actions of employees.
  • Follow safe driving procedures and safety protocols at all times.
  • Abide by all rules and regulations set by the VA.
  • Conduct pre/post trip shuttle inspections prior to and after scheduled shift.
  • Maintain shuttle in excellent condition by re-fueling, cleaning, and managing repairs/maintenance as needed.
  • Report any issues or concerns to the Regional Manager and/or the Director of Operations.
  • Provide support to Valet operations at the Ralph H. Johnson VAMC, as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must have a minimum of 1-2 years related experience.
  • Must pass and maintain a criminal background check and have a clean motor vehicle record.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen.
  • Must possess strong customer service skills and the ability to respond calmly and professionally when handling conflict.
  • Regularly work outdoors in inclement weather including rain, snow, heat and cold
  • Must have the ability to work independently and within established guidelines, follow directions, and work well with others.
  • Technical capabilities and basic computer knowledge.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Excellent organizational skills & attention to detail.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent, required.

Experience Requirements

  • 2 years fleet maintenance and repair experience, required.
  • 1-year driving experience
  • 1+ years management experience, preferred
  • Commercial passenger vehicle experience, preferred

Required Licenses or Certifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid/Current Commercial Driver’s License with P endorsement
  • Valid/Current DOT Medical Certificate

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting while driving shuttle bus.
  • Must be able to lift 35 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to work outside in all weather conditions.
  • Must be able to clearly see during light and dark conditions.
  • Must be able to bend, kneel, and effectively secure wheelchairs in place with straps.
  • Must be able to perform detailed maintenance checks under the hood and around engine bay of shuttle bus.
