SALARY RANGE: $60,000 - $65,000

THE OPPORTUNITY

The United Way of Massachusetts (UWMB) Bay is seeking a Manager, Development Systems and Research who will embrace the work of the UWMB Development team becoming a more diverse and inclusive department through the practice of community-centric fundraising principles. The Development department's charge is to unite, grow, and strengthen United Way's public and private partnerships, and leverage those partnerships to generate significant resources -- financial, talent, time, and connections -- with an emphasis on unrestricted support, to enable everyone across races and ethnicities to share in the wealth, knowledge, and resources available in our region.


POSITION OVERVIEW

The Manager, Development Systems and Research (Manager) plays an important role in helping the Development department cultivate and grow a strong and diverse network of champions committed to advancing an economically just region. At the core of this role is a crucial focus on ensuring the Development department has the background information, context, strategy, and data and systems necessary to support fundraising efforts and improve donor engagement through an effective moves management process. This role also serves as the lead researcher for the Development department, working closely with department leaders and frontline staff to ensure they are informed and prepared for their external relations efforts.

Under the guidance of the Director, Development Systems, the Manager will support departmental technological and data literacy by helping to document and maintain resources for staff. They will also assist in project execution related to reporting, data analysis, data integrity, and the planned transition to a new CRM.

KEY RESPONSIBILITES:

The Manager, Development Systems and Research is responsible for managing the day-to-day execution of three key areas: prospect research, knowledge management, and reporting and data management. The ideal candidate for this position will achieve these goals with success in the following areas:

  1. Prospect Research
  • Conduct proactive research methodologies utilizing paid and free, online and offline donor research resources to support the fundraising efforts of United Way Massachusetts Bay
  • Analyze and interpret financial data and assets, biographical and personal information, professional and business information, areas of interest, philanthropic support, affiliations, compensation, stocks/options, retirement plans, and property transactions, to identify financial capacity and propensity, for purposes of developing comprehensive profile reports and briefs on annual gift, planned gift and major gift donors and prospects, tailored to the needs of revenue generating staff, to be used to develop strategies and solicitation requests and/or for cultivation events.
  • Provide research briefs and philanthropic partner profiles, including assessment of wealth and philanthropic interests (or grant-making criteria), and propensity to support United Way.
  • Provide high quality briefings on donors and prospects in advance of meetings and events. In cases where research is needed for individuals or organizations outside of existing portfolios, the Manager will hold primary responsibility for developing the brief. For briefs related to donors within existing portfolios the Manager will supplement the information as needed.
  • Research and make recommendations on the appropriate tools and software to support effective and efficient prospect research.
  • Serve as the department expert for and key user of research tools.
  • Establish and maintain a system of media alerts for key partners and donors and facilitate information to relevant staff.
  • Leverage wealth screenings and predictive modeling techniques to support the revenue planning process and enhance a data-driven approach to prospect management.
  • Maintain membership and staff access to publications and tools that support research efforts.
  1. Knowledge Management
  • Identify and implement innovative approaches for the processing and documentation of policies, systems, practices, and processes and their associated data.
  • Follow and maintain internal policies and procedures to ensure the quality and integrity of data and administration.
  • Create and maintain knowledge management systems (searchable content library, cross-team drives, etc.) for resources, procedures, and trainings to ensure front-line fundraisers are independently successful in leveraging available systems.
  • Support trainings for Development department in cultivating technical fluency and data literacy.
  • Continually analyze processes and procedures to identify ways to improve efficiency and become less reliant on manual processes, and implement changes and improvements.
  • Support the bi-weekly Development Strategy and Moves Management Meeting by sharing progress against goals and supporting frontline fundraising staff in their preparation for external meetings.
  • Enter, update, manage and track research materials in the CRM. Maintain the integrity of all constituent records.
  1. Reporting and Data Management
  • Become and serve as a systems expert in the various reporting and data tools the department utilizes, especially the CRM. Serve as the Department's CRM administrator.
  • Support staff in CRM database use across the Department, as needed.
  • Aid and assist the migration to a new CRM within the next 2 years.
  • Manage processes and dashboards to accurately track revenue, donor and volunteer engagement to support increased affinity to United Way mission and work via Key Performance Indicator (KPI) and Objective and Key Results (OKR) dashboards.
  • Execute regular and customized reports for staff as needed to enable frontline staff to achieve their sub-team goals.
  • In partnership with the Director, Development Operations, maintain, update, and enforce a "moves management" system that drives mutually-agreed upon cultivation and solicitation strategies for donors and prospects.
  • Conduct gift pyramid and prospect pipeline analysis to assess current and future prospects needed to achieve fundraising goals.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and to the mission of the United Way of Massachusetts Bay.
  • Bachelor's Degree or comparable experience considered.
  • A minimum of 2-4 years of experience non-profit experience.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications, Internet usage and software applications.
  • Experience with Microsoft Power BI and/or Python preferred.
  • Experience in database applications required.
  • Must be comfortable working in ambiguity and be a systems and design thinker.
  • Demonstrates solid organizational and project management skills.
  • Strong problem solving, critical thinking, and analytical skills, with an empathy for user experience.
  • Strong listening and communication skills - written, interpersonal, especially the ability to translate data into narrative.
  • Strong attention to detail and proven ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously to meet deadlines.
  • Familiarity with research platforms and techniques.
  • Ability to understand the work of our team and organization, constituent motivations and barriers, and make connections to align needs with opportunities.
  • Proven ability to collaborate and be successful working with cross-functional teams, and to be self-driven in independent work.
  • Commitment to building cultural humility by continually learning and by actively promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of our work.
  • Reliable access to Internet and flexibility with hybrid work, with at least 1 days in the office at one of United Way's offices: Boston, Beverly, or Attleboro.
