The SARA Applied Physics Department, within the High Power Electromagnetics (HPEM) Division, is looking for a highly motivated and skilled High Voltage Test Engineer to join our Advanced Systems and Testing team in Colorado Springs, CO. The ideal candidate will be responsible for formulating and executing detailed test plans for high power electromagnetic systems, with a focus on solid-state transient electrical systems. The role demands a deep understanding of high voltage environments, specifically systems operating at voltages greater than 20kV DC and AC. The candidate will be involved in the entire testing lifecycle, from design and planning to execution, analysis, and reporting. This position requires a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical experience to ensure the integrity, safety, and performance of our systems. The candidate will have the opportunity to grow and learn with talented engineers, physicists, and technicians on long-standing programs and new programs supporting our customers. Our small group will allow the candidate to experience, contribute, and collaborate in a multidisciplinary nature from conception all the way through to operation.

The candidate must be a high-performing engineer with technical pedigree in High Voltage Testing. Candidates must be strong team participants, have excellent communication skills, be resourceful and creative, and willing to contribute to a multidisciplinary and fast-paced engineering environment.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Formulate and execute comprehensive test plans for systems and subsystems operating under high voltage and high current conditions
  • Maintain and calibrate high voltage test equipment (100s of Volts to 100s of kilovolts) to ensure accuracy and reliability of test results
  • Work with diverse teams of engineers and technicians to conduct tests on high voltage and high current systems and subsystems
  • Gather, decipher, and analyze datasets to extract meaningful insights
  • Compile technical documentation, encompassing design specifications, test reports, and operational manuals
  • Uphold a secure and hazard-free laboratory setting to ensure the safety of all personnel

Technical Skillsets

  • Solid grasp of the fundamentals of one or more of the following: pulsed power, power electronics, or power systems
  • Robust foundation in high power testing, complemented by hands-on experience in high voltage (>20kV dc and ac) and high current laboratory environments
  • Capability to formulate and execute system and component level test plans
  • Proficiency in utilizing a range of test equipment, including oscilloscopes and high voltage and high current probes
  • Expertise in orchestrating and conducting experiments, inclusive of using instrumentation to gauge key system metrics
  • Competence in performing statistical analysis and data visualization, deriving significant insights from intricate datasets

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, physics, or a related field
  • Strong foundation in fundamental electrical engineering concepts
  • Strong foundation in the concepts of high-power test engineering including one or more of the following: pulsed power, power electronics, power systems, high voltage, or high current systems
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret or equivalent clearance
  • US Citizen
  • Available for moderate levels of travel and off-site work
  • May require moderate physical effort, involving standing, sitting and use of hands while performing duties, carrying, or lifting up to 50 pounds
  • Working environment is indoor, moderately quiet, reasonably clean, well-lighted and well-ventilated, moderate physical hazards may exist

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3+ years’ experience in high-power test engineering including pulsed power, power electronics, power systems, high voltage, and high current systems
  • Knowledge of solid-state technologies and Pulsed Power systems
  • Active DoD Top-Secret Clearance

Salary Range: $75,000 - $130,000
