Instrumentation and Controls Engineer

Location: New Orleans, LA

Salary: $70,000 - $90,000


Job Summary

The Controls Engineer will be a critical member of the Company’s Engineering & Construction team, reporting directly to the Director, Platform Instrumentation & Controls.

The successful candidate will also be expected to be responsible for assisting in the repair, maintenance, and retrofit of all instrumentation and controls which includes designing and maintaining of systems for district energy plants producing hot water, chilled water and steam and its energy transfer stations. Will be responsible for process control instrumentation maintenance and programming of the distributed control system and its peripherals. Will work extensively with Emerson DeltaV, Allen-Bradley PLCs and other types of logic controllers. Must be able to program, troubleshoot and maintain all instruments and logic controllers which utilizes programming languages: plain English structured text, sequential function chart, function block diagram and ladder logic.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Work independently and guide operations staff team members.

• Provide up-to-date knowledge for various types of instruments and its appropriate applications.

• Specify, review and selection of various types of instrumentation and control systems for control and monitoring of process equipment.

• Collaborate with engineering firms to design electrical, instrumentation and control systems.

• Design, review and integrate process instrumentation, controls systems, electrical equipment, and other plant components.

• Design review and integrate electrical, control and instrumentation documents such as loop diagrams, control panel design and electrical installation details.

• Design and program process control loops, tune control loops and have familiarity with PIDs.

• Create process support documentation.

• Create standard operating procedures.

• Instrumentation and Controls support to operations.

• Repair and maintenance of fiber optic network systems.

• Inspects, tests, calibrate, adjusts, and repairs electric, electronic, mechanical, and pneumatic instruments and systems used to indicate, record, and control.

• Inspects meters, indicators, and gauges to detect failures and process defects.

• Calibration of accuracy of flowmeters, pressure transmitters, temperature transmitters, controllers, and other recording devices. Additionally, including indicating instruments used to locate defective components in the process system such as pressure gauges, mercury manometers, potentiometers, pulse and signal generators, ammeters, voltmeters, and power meters.

• Plan and schedule corrective and preventive maintenance work orders for all types of instruments.

• Work with operations and maintenance personnel to complete work orders on all types and levels of instrumentation and controls.

• Will work with management to create reports from the process control DeltaV historian.

Skills & Qualifications

• A minimum 4-year bachelor’s degree in engineering such as electrical, controls or instrumentation engineering.

Must have knowledge of PLC/HMI/SCADA/DCS hardware and software.

• Strong knowledge of various instrumentation including flow, temperature, pressure and valves.

• Must have experience with development and integration of various communication protocols such as CIP, Modbus RTU and Modbus TCP/IP.

• Be able to read and understand P&ID and PFD diagrams.

• Be able to read and understand loop diagrams, electrical schematics and one-line diagrams.

• Plan, manage and coordinate Instrumentation and Controls activities.

• Must be able to perform work in a safe manner; overhead, climb ladders, squat, bend, perform in a confined space, dusty and noisy environment, work outdoors, plenum spaces, hot and cold environments.

• Must be willing to work through all holidays, weekends and over-time.

• Must be willing to work during all types of weather events including hurricanes and storms.

• Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel and Outlook.

• Will work closely with the operations and maintenance lead personnel along with the Plant Director.
