ORGANIZATION SUMMARY

For more than two decades, LA Promise Fund has uplifted schools, students and families in South LA to ensure more Black and Latinx students are prepared for success in college, career, and life. Today, we accomplish this goal as an education management organization that runs two South LA charter schools and coordinates high impact educational enrichment programming to ensure students are college and career bound.  Westbrook Academy (Russell Westbrook Why Not? Middle and High Schools) advances a college-prep culture and integrated digital media arts-themed education, with significant parent engagement, socio-emotional supports, and leadership development. 

 

Simultaneously, LA Promise Fund works with schools County-wide to offer a portfolio of programs that foster motivated, engaged, and directed students poised for academic, professional, and personal success. Currently, these regional programs include a focus on female empowerment, STEM, media arts, college readiness, career exposure and work-based-learning, school improvement design, and parent engagement. We work alongside a network of essential partners, students, parents, teachers, and school leaders to build strong schools that increase educational equity within South LA and beyond.  To learn more about LA Promise Fund visit www.lapromisefund.org.


Additionally,  Black College Success (BCS), a project managed by LA Promise Fund,  partners with select universities to create a college success pathway that empowers more Black students from SLATE-Z+ high schools to complete a Bachelor’s degree.

POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Communications Manager will aid in telling LA Promise Fund’s story through content creation, social media, web and marketing support. An ideal ca­­ndidate is responsible, organized, dynamic, resourceful, and eager to gain non-profit and communications experience.  This is a full-time, exempt position.



RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Ensure consistent messaging across departments/constituents, support of market position and brand identity, and strategic promotion of current events
  • Follow/update master and individual editorial calendars across departments
  • Assess effectiveness of all communication strategies, assert data analysis to drive design and strategy, and collect market feedback and response.
  • Maintain a timely photo and video archive to be used across all channels and departments.
  • Photograph and document projects and happenings at LAPF, BCS, and Westbrook Academy events
  • Research, pitch, and write short engaging content for blogs and newsletters
  • Brainstorm and pitch new and exciting ways to share our stories
  • Support updates to LA Promise Fund, Westbrook Academy school and BCS websites
  • Schedule and compose social media posts on behalf of LA Promise Fund, Westbrook Academy, BCS
  • Collaborate with Director of Communications in creating and executing strategy for increased exposure and engagement on social media platforms
  • Support branding, graphic design and collateral creation needs, where appropriate, for LAPF programs and Westbrook Academy 
  • Develop and engage media contacts to highlight stories and impact on behalf of LAPF, BCS and Westbrook Academy
  • Other duties as assigned


CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience

  • Degree in marketing/communications, business, education, STEM or other related field
  • Experience working with students or within schools, preferably within K-12 Los Angeles schools
  • Strong writing, copy editing, and content management skills required across all media channels
  • Ability to think and communicate strategically across a variety of stakeholders.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively on project management.
  • Experience managing communication/editorial calendars, media vendors and public relations
  • Ability to professionally interact with senior management, faculty and staff at all levels.



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Technical Skills
    • An understanding of K-12 education, adult learning, and/or STEM
    • Fluent computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets, presentation, and online communications (e.g., Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Zoom)
    • Familiarity with website maintenance and social media platforms
    • Experience with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop preferred
    • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the use of web, digital and social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, SEO/SEM, E-Communications, Video, Google Analytics)
  • Soft Skills
    • Enjoys student and teacher engagement; not shy about engaging a conversation with strangers
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of stakeholders in a diverse community
    • Resourceful, detail-oriented, able to multitask, prioritize and manage time effectively
    • Self-starter with a knack for problem-solving, networking, creating new relationships and opportunities
    • Entrepreneurial: a hard worker with a high energy level, action-oriented, and solution-oriented
    • Strong organizational, administrative, and project management skills
    • A strong collaborator, good listener and strategist; comfortable receiving input from many sources, and able to analyze and formulate disparate information into a sound, well-organized plan
  • Bilingual (reading, writing & speaking) in Spanish required

  • Must clear a LiveScan criminal background check 
  • Must clear a TB Risk Assessment 
  • Must complete Mandated Reporter training
