Job Description

JOB PURPOSE:

Performs journeyman or master electrician level electrical work by exercising the acquired and developed skills and knowledge pertaining to the installation, alteration, maintenance, new construction, inspection and repair of electrical distribution systems (including primary and secondary wiring) and of laboratory and research electrical devices and equipment, emergency power generation systems and other common electrical items used in the University community.

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Repair and perform preventive maintenance work on all equipment and utilities to deter breakdowns and increase equipment expectancy life.
  • Applies analytical and manual skills in inspecting, maintaining, installing, troubleshooting, calibrating, safety testing and repairing motors, generators, chargers, transformers, high voltage electrical systems and a variety of clinical, laboratory and research equipment including their component parts to ensure maximum and efficient operation.
  • Installs new systems and repairs existing wiring systems, electrical conduit, communications systems and related University-owned equipment by adhering to necessary procedures that would ensure conformity with blueprints, OSHA specifications, JCAH and NFPA requirements, national and local electrical codes and requirements of other specialized codes and regulating agencies.
  • Maintains a variety of small electrical devices by repairing or replacing items such as hardware, lamps, fuses, sockets, ballasts, dropping resistors, contacts, coils, switches, timers, bearings, brushes, cords, and plugs as a matter of preventive maintenance and safety considerations.
  • Makes necessary corrections and adjustments to electrical and mechanical components on the cooling and heating units, to maintain maximum operating condition.
  • Recommends commercial repairs when conditions are beyond the College's on site capabilities.
  • Transfers primary power from one power source to another.
  • Sets poles, strings overhead lines and does overhead line maintenance.
  • Uses a wide variety of machines, light equipment, electrical hand tools and test equipment.
  • Maintains an up-to-date knowledge of the latest national and local electrical codes.
  • Works with other trades in electrically related problems such as elevator repair, electric bed repair, fire alarm system maintenance and electrical aspects of electronic equipment.
  • Maintains and periodically updates equipment history log sheets and P.M. order sheets to meet requirement of history and legality for all equipment items.
  • May be responsible for training apprentice electricians through "on-the-job" training.
  • Estimates jobs in terms of cost of labor, materials and recommendations and submits to supervisor.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Three years as a journeyman electrician.
    • Current JE98 license.
  • Experience with heavy equipment preferred.
  • Valid and clean state driver's license.
  • Must be able to pass background check, with NO prior convictions of any felonies.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Knowledge of electrical installation, troubleshooting, repair and maintenance.
  • Knowledge and comprehension of applicable electrical codes are required.
  • Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment of the electrical trade is required.
  • Skill in operating computers and various word-processing, spreadsheets, and database software programs in a Windows environment.
  • Ability to exercise excellent judgment around live, hazardous voltages without supervision.
  • Ability to properly shut down energized circuits without supervision.
  • Ability to understand and follow both verbal and written instruction.
  • Ability to read and interpret sketches, diagrams and blueprints is required.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in job assignments, practices, techniques and the theory and operation of electrical equipment and controls and be able to communicate these needs.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and work from architectural drawings, blueprints, and schematics and the Uniform Building Code, Electrical Code, and Safety Code.
  • Ability to work independently and meet strict time lines.
  • Ability to work at heights using lifts or ladders.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain work orders.
  • Ability to prioritize and accomplish tasks within strict deadlines.
  • Ability to interact and maintain good working relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in the Navajo and English language.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently stand, walk, bend, stoop, and squat.
  • Occasionally crawl, climb heights, reach above shoulders, crouch, kneel, balance, and push/pull.
  • Use hands for dexterity of motion, repetitive movement of both hands.
  • Have normal auditory, visual acuity, and verbal communications skills.
  • The employee must frequently carry up to 25 pounds. Occasionally lift 50-75 lbs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Work is generally performed in indoor setting and an outdoors environment.
  • Standing and walking may be on uneven surfaces or unstable ground.
  • Situations where safety-toe shoes, safety goggles, gloves, protective face shields, or hardhats are needed may occur.
  • Exposure to dust, chemicals, variances in temperature, and equipment with moving parts.
  • Exposure to natural weather conditions, various dusts and mists, and normal debris and hazards common at sites may occur while performing outdoor duties.
  • May work in cramped, dusty, dirty, unlighted, insect infested and contaminated areas.
  • May be exposed to long periods of uncomfortable cramped, standing, laying or sitting positions.
  • May be subject to loud noises, electric shock, bruises, cuts, broken bones, insect and rodent bites, fumes, smoke and airborne contaminants.
  • Tight time constraints and multiple demands are common.
  • Evening and/or weekend work may be required. Extended hours and irregular shifts may be required
