About Us The St. Louis Jewish Community Center (the J) has been providing excellent health and cultural experiences for the entire community for over 140 years. We are hiring for a Full-Time Baker in our Kitchen.

Summary:

Kitchen J Assistant - Baker prepares desserts and baked goods and assists with all other production for our Early Childhood, Adult Day Center and Home Delivery participants, seasonal programs, as well as catering. This person works collaboratively with the entire staff to ensure an effective and professional kitchen.

Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for all aspects of production of baked goods including but not limited to breads, muffins, pastries, cookies, mousses, for program consumption and catering.
  • Able to produce from-scratch products, accurately follow recipes and make pre-prepared items according to their instructions.
  • Able to create/find/keep/organize standardized recipes for all items produced.
  • Takes initiative to assist chef, and fellow cooks to prepare food for all programs and catering. Ensure portions and food follow established menus. Assist in ensuring correct food temperatures are adhered to during preparation and service.
  • Demonstrates ability to work collaboratively with all kitchen staff, Chef, management, and office personnel.
  • Takes lead with production, organization and display of desserts and baked items during events
  • Assist with catering event/ special event preparation, and service, packaging and labeling.
  • Adhere to Kashrut laws.
  • Maintain sanitation standards in kitchen and storerooms. Maintain Health Departments sanitation guidelines for staff working in food preparation operations. Show initiative and assist with dishwashing and cleaning of kitchen area.
  • Assist with supply orders as requested. Ensures all necessary product for production had been ordered by communicating with chef. Checks and maintains product quality.
  • Labels, dates, and rotates all products according to internal and health department standards.
  • Distribute food and supplies to other departments as needed/instructed.
  • Assist in maintaining inventory of items in refrigerators, freezers, and storerooms.


Requirements

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Culinary training or education is desired.
  • Demonstrated ability to function well in a professional kitchen environment necessary.
  • Experience in quantity food production is required.
  • Must have ability to read recipes and prepare food under direction.
  • Ability to keep your work area and yourself organized.
  • Good physical condition, including the ability to stand for prolonged periods, lift 25lbs, bend, stretch, and walk to other areas on campus. Able to move in the kitchen in a safe and efficient manner. Ability to move, carry and transfer products or boxes from racks and shelves to carts or counters.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills with people of all ages. Customer service and hospitality focus is important. Comply with any request from clients to satisfy program needs. Work as a team with other Food Service staff.
  • Serv Safe Certification is desired or willingness to gain certification.

Kitchen J staff are required to have Hepatitis A vaccines (provided if necessary) and may be required to register on the MO Family Care Safety Registry. Employees are subject to pre-employment background screenings and if driving J vehicles, physical and drug tests. Drivers of agency vehicles are part of our random drug testing pool.
