Job Description

SUMMARY

The Lab Automation Engineer position ensures that maintenance and end-user support for laboratory automation equipment are reliably and consistently available for production. This includes performing maintenance by ensuring appropriate time, tools, and resources to meet production laboratory needs. This position assumes responsibility for meeting regulatory compliance standards for all associated documentation and will facilitate and schedule day-to-day duties, as well as oversight of departmental projects, initiatives, and training. The Lab Automation Engineer routinely serves as a coordinator and communication link with other departments.

This position will ensure compliance with Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) policies, State Departments of Health, Good Documentation Practices (GDP), Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Good Clinical Practices (GCP), Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), EMEA and FDA Guidelines, general State and Country Regulations such as but not limited to (CLIA, CAP, USP, ISO 9001, USDA regulations, HTA license, DEA and State Controlled Substance programs) where site appropriate.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Provides support for end-users of automation equipment, addresses instrument error notifications and resolution. Trains others in proper use of automated equipment, processes, and procedures.
  • Performs automation instrumentation maintenance and repairs, instrument qualification, and change control processes for lab automation equipment and software. Supports calibration procedures, verification, and preventative maintenance programs for lab automation equipment and instrument specific software. Monitors and assists with software installation, testing and validation procedures.
  • Under manager guidance, communicates and coordinates with vendors to purchase, install, maintain, repair, and validate lab automation systems. Coordinates with other departments to plan and prepare for the impact of new laboratory automation equipment or software. Tracks and coordinates projects and upgrade requests, collaborating with management on project selection and prioritization. Provides guidance to engineers on scheduling, prioritization on maintenance and repairs.
  • Responsible for day-to-day scheduling, including work and project assignments and ensuring maintenance schedules are performed. With management support, responsible for goal achievement and intra-departmental communication and coordination to meet company goals.
  • Provides project management, including communication and coordination across departments. Assists with developing project justification documents. Supports management with resource planning and scheduling to include recommendations for capital expenditure and contributions to budget activities. Tracks equipment lifecycle and recommends replacement or upgrade.
  • Under manager direction writes and reviews standard operating procedures.

TRAVEL

This position may require up to 10 % travel over the course of a year.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or Experience

Master’s degree in a science, computer or engineering related field; two year’s related experience OR Bachelor's degree in a science, computer or engineering related field; four year’s related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

With-in one-year complete Basic EVOware Liquid handling training class
