Job Title: Structural Steel Estimator
Job Overview: A Structural Steel Estimator is responsible for accurately
assessing and estimating the cost of structural steel projects. This role involves
analyzing project specifications, blueprints, and other relevant documents to
determine the materials, labor, and equipment required for successful
completion. The estimator collaborates with various stakeholders, such as
project managers, engineers, and vendors, to ensure accurate and competitive
bids are prepared. This position requires a strong understanding of
construction processes, structural engineering principles, and market trends in
the steel industry.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Project Analysis:
• Review project specifications, drawings, and other relevant
documents to understand the scope of work.
• Conduct on-site visits to assess site conditions and potential
challenges that may impact the project estimate.
2. Cost Estimation:
• Quantify and estimate the quantities of structural steel, including
beams, columns, braces, and connections required for the project.
• Evaluate labor costs, equipment costs, and overhead expenses
associated with the steel fabrication process.
• Utilize cost databases, historical data, and industry benchmarks to
develop accurate estimates.
3. Collaboration:
• Work closely with project managers, architects, engineers, and
other stakeholders to clarify project requirements and resolve any
discrepancies in the plans.
• Communicate with steel fabricators, suppliers, and subcontractors
to obtain competitive pricing for materials and services.
4. Bid Preparation:
• Prepare detailed and competitive bid proposals for submission to
clients.• Ensure that all bid documents are complete, accurate, and
submitted within established deadlines.
5. Market Research:
• Stay informed about industry trends, material costs, and market
conditions that may impact the pricing of structural steel projects.
• Analyze competitor bids and market trends to maintain
competitiveness.
6. Cost Tracking:
• Monitor project costs during the construction phase and provide
support to project managers in managing deviations from the
estimated costs.
7. Software Utilization:
• Use specialized estimating software and tools to enhance accuracy
and efficiency in the estimation process.
8. Continuous Improvement:
• Stay abreast of advancements in construction and steel fabrication
technologies.
• Seek opportunities for process improvements in the estimating
and bidding process.
Qualifications:
• Proven experience as a Structural Steel Estimator in the construction
industry.
• Strong knowledge of structural steel fabrication, erection processes, and
industry standards.
• Proficient in reading and interpreting construction drawings and
specifications.
• Excellent analytical and mathematical skills.
• Effective communication and negotiation skills.
• Familiarity with construction estimating software.
• Detail-oriented with a high level of accuracy in estimating.
