MMI Industrial & Steel is excited to announce the opening of a position for a Structural Steel Estimator. This full-time role is pivotal to our operations and ideal for someone looking to bring their expertise to a reputable and forward-thinking company. Located at our headquarters, this position is not eligible for remote work, underscoring the hands-on nature of the tasks involved.

The Structural Steel Estimator is a key member of our team, responsible for preparing accurate, competitive, and well-documented cost estimates for structural steel, miscellaneous metals, and industrial projects. This role demands a results-driven, detail-oriented professional who combines precision with strategic thinking in a fast-paced workplace. The Estimator works closely with various departments including sales, project management, and leadership, to assess risks, define pricing strategy, and determine project viability while upholding our core company values and fostering a collaborative team environment. Success in this position is characterized by consistent estimate accuracy, robust cross-functional communication, and a proactive approach to identifying risks and opportunities that enhance profitability.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Prepare detailed estimates for structural steel, miscellaneous metals, and industrial projects with accuracy, consistency, and accountability.
  • Analyze architectural and structural drawings, specifications, and bid documents to develop complete scopes of work.
  • Perform takeoffs, quantity surveys, and pricing for materials, labor, equipment, erection, and subcontracted work.
  • Evaluate project risks, constructability issues, schedule impacts, and long-lead items early in the estimating process.
  • Collaborate with project management, field leadership, detailing, and vendors to ensure estimates reflect real-world execution.
  • Solicit, review, and analyze vendor and subcontractor pricing to ensure scope alignment and value-driven decisions.
  • Develop clear, organized bid proposals, inclusions, exclusions, and clarifications that support clean project handoff.
  • Maintain estimating databases, historical cost data, and pricing models to improve accuracy and efficiency.
  • Participate in bid reviews with leadership, providing strategic input on pricing, margins, and competitiveness.
  • Support project handoff meetings and remain engaged post-award to ensure continuity and accountability.
  • Respond promptly to internal and external customers with professional, solution-oriented communication.
  • Document estimating assumptions, scope decisions, and risk considerations clearly and thoroughly.
Requirements
  • 3–5+ years of experience estimating structural steel, miscellaneous metals, or industrial steel projects.
  • Proven dependability and motivation to take ownership of estimates from start to finish.
  • Strong understanding of steel fabrication processes, erection means and methods, and industry standards.
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural and structural drawings and specifications (AISC, AWS).
  • Experience with quantity takeoffs, pricing development, and scope analysis.
  • Familiarity with project schedules, coordination requirements, and construction sequencing.
  • Knowledge of general construction contracts, bid procedures, and risk assessment.
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Bluebeam, Tekla, Foundation, and estimating software/tools.
  • Detail-oriented mindset with the ability to maintain a big-picture, profitability-focused view.
  • Strong technical understanding of structural steel, miscellaneous metals, and industrial steel construction.
  • High attention to detail balanced with the ability to assess overall project strategy and risk.
