Position Overview

Under the direction of the Chief Veterinary Officer, the Training School Kennel Manager will hold primary responsibility for all aspects of animal husbandry as it relates to the dogs in the Training School Kennel. You will facilitate and ensure that exemplary care, in a healthy mental and physical environment, is given to all dogs in the Kennel. Other responsibilities include oversight of canine enrichment for behavioral development, equipment, supplies, inventory and ordering for Training School Kennel related needs and supervision of Training School Kennel staff as well as Volunteers to ensure that care and operational standards are met, and protocols followed.

Normal shift hours will be Tuesday - Saturday; 8am - 5pm

The Role
  • Manage a large (150+) kennel population of dogs at any one time; responsibilities to include coordinating dog moves, communicating across departments effectively and cooperatively primarily with the Training Department, Veterinary Department, Breeding Kennel, and Pup Program.
  • Oversee, direct, support and be able to perform as part of a team, all tasks associated with the Kennel Technician including, but not limited to, bathing, feeding, check overs, nail clipping, ear cleaning, and medicating according to established policies and procedures.
  • Work closely with the Training Department staff to ensure that all animal needs are met within the training cycle.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Veterinary Officer to stay within the annual budget while at the same time fulfilling business needs for staffing and equipment as well as helping manage capital projects related to the Kennel and Kennel buildings.
  • Direct the work of Kennel staff to ensure that all daily duties/kennel work are performed in accordance with established guidelines and that adequate support is available to carry out same.
  • Oversee training of all staff as well as provide coaching and mentoring, fostering an atmosphere of growth, independence, and critical thinking.
  • Maintain an adequate supply of dog food as well as necessary supplies for all dogs in the Training School Kennel; coordinate with the Veterinary Hospital staff to ensure that all special veterinary diet needs are met.
  • Work closely with Puppy/Dog Adoption Program Manager to arrange all activities so released dogs are ready to depart; includes but is not limited to bathing and preparing necessary release paperwork and supplies as needed.
  • Adjust capability to meet fluctuations in kennel population.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records utilizing point of entry system.
  • Maintain inventory and order all kennel supplies from multiple vendors.
  • Coordinate building maintenance including safety, sanitation, climate control, and equipment with the Maintenance Department.
  • Respond to requests for Kennel tours; arrange and conduct tours for Pup Program, Development and Leadership.
  • Work with Volunteers providing training, support, guidance, and recognition.
  • Perform other duties and projects as assigned.

Qualifications You Will Need

  • Three to five years' experience in Leadership managing a team with an emphasis on team building, supervision, delegation, and support.
  • Strong relationship-builder with the ability to find a common purpose, build consensus and strengthen collaboration.
  • High degree of competency in all Kennel Technician duties; experience caring for dogs in a kennel, Veterinarian's office, or training environment. Basic canine obedience skills gained through personal, volunteer, or professional experience.
  • Impeccable attention to detail required for recordkeeping as it pertains to the overall well-being of the dogs and the efficient operation of the Kennel.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; public speaking and presentation experience a plus
  • Proven organizational and planning skills with a demonstrated ability to lead and manage change.
  • Ability to accurately assess situations and make quick, sound judgements independently when it comes to animal husbandry and staffing needs.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities.
  • Reliability, a high level of integrity and punctuality are essential.
  • This is an essential personnel position so flexibility in availability is a must; including weekends, evenings and holidays are required as needed in addition to reporting to work for emergencies.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office programs; Salesforce savvy a plus
  • Physically able to lift and control 65-75 pound dogs and withstand up to two hours of repetitive bending, stooping, kneeling, and squatting on concrete surface.

Salary Range $55k - $65k. The provided compensation range represents the low and high of the range for this position. Actual salaries will vary based on industry standards and may be above or below the range; determinations will be made based on numerous factors.
