Job Description

The Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana (RHI), named Best Rehabilitation Hospital in Indiana in 2022 and 2023, provides quality rehabilitation services to those facing life-changing injuries or illness. We specialize in the areas of brain injury, stroke, spinal cord injury and complex medical conditions. RHI is the only Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Model System in the state of Indiana and one of only 16 in the U.S. Our campus on the west side of Indianapolis specializes in inpatient and outpatient evidence-based, patient-centered therapy for ages 15 and older. The Clinical Charge Nurse Evening is a registered nurse with a keen interest in Rehabilitation Nursing who holds a CRRN specialty and has a history of demonstrated clinical expertise and leadership. This position is responsible for managing all aspects of the care of patients on their assigned unit for their shift. The CCN will also be responsible to assist and support the Nurse Manager and Program Director in coordinating, evaluating, and improving care for patients on their assigned unit aged 15 and older. Candidates who are interested in the position but lack the CRRN certification will be considered for the position providing that they sit for the examination at the first possible opportunity following their being chosen for the position.


JOB DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS


  • Demonstrates expertise in complex clinical nursing skills with the rehabilitation population served. Plans for the delivery of patient care for population served aged 15 and older, through job descriptions, individual capabilities of team members, and nursing care required by patients.
  • Participates in the evaluation of unit-based activities, holding staff accountable for rounding, bedside handoff, use of white boards and timely response to call lights. Leads by example mentoring fellow staff members, making safe and equitable staff assignments and recognizing and responding appropriately to changes in a patient's condition. Conducts rounds to assess patients' response in relation to established nursing care goals.
  • Participation in house wide/departmental committees or task forces as assigned to ensure quality outcomes for patients and to improve organizational performance. Participates in or conducts research activities and evidenced based nursing practice related to the patient population served.
  • Mentors staff, including new orientees and is a demonstrated role model for staff. Demonstrates ability to recognize and define problems. Uses resources and techniques in developing solutions, coordinating activities necessary in maintaining safe and functional environment. Promotes the utilization of the Nursing Process and collaborates with Nurse Manager and Program Director in the development of unit goals.
  • Maintains a cooperative and professional relationship among all members of the health care and program model teams by communicating information clearly, responding to requests openly, building rapport and actively participating in team problem solving methods. Assists or conducts patient care conferences which are documented.
  • Employee is focused on providing customer satisfaction (including, but not limited to, patients, co-workers, visitors, vendors and physicians) as a primary goal/outcome of all interactions, places customer first in the performance of job duties and responds to needs in a timely manner as evidenced by the absence of legitimate customer complaints.
  • Participates in continuous quality improvement/ program evaluation activities and observes measures to ensure that hospital, Joint Commission, CARF, and other quality standards are met.
  • Uses appropriate technique in performing duties to avoid or minimize accidents and injury related to unsafe practice. Proactively seeks information and resources, including the Environment of Care Manual, to aid in safe performance of duties to contribute to the RHI culture of safety.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES


This position requires the ability to assess the operational needs of the area to effectively assign the patient care staff to meet patient care needs. The incumbent is expected to make independent decisions based on guidelines established by area nursing management. The position also requires knowledge of the qualifications, duties and responsibilities of a professional nurse as acquired during clinical nursing experience at an approved School of Nursing.

The incumbent must have knowledge of the duties, limitations and responsibilities of non-professional personnel assigned to patient care area and an ability to assess the patients' needs (acute care, rehab, age dependent) in order to plan, direct and coordinate nursing patient care areas. This position also requires an ability to instruct other personnel, an ability to instruct the patient and family concerning patient care and health practices, an ability to keep current on changes in nursing and medical practices, etc., an awareness and understanding of legal implications of all patient care activities and of employee relationships and activities, and familiarity with community resources available to patients and families.


EXPERIENCE


This position requires experience gained through an approved School of Nursing. A minimum of three years of experience as a Registered Nurse or in a related position is highly desired. Progressively responsible positions are a plus.


SPECIAL TRAINING, LICENSURE, CREDENTIALING


  • ACLS preferred.
  • Current licensure by the Indiana State Board of Nursing Licensure and Registration. CRRN required or obtained within 12 months of starting position.
  • Must receive CPR training in accordance with American Heart Association Standards resulting in receipt of course completion card upon hire and maintain current thereafter.
  • ACLS certification preferred.
  • Certification in Rehabilitation Registered Nursing is required at the first possible opportunity that the RN meets the criteria to take the examination.

EDUCATION

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing. BSN is preferred.
