Freelance Educator

Storm King Art Center seeks Freelance Educators to work with K-12 student groups during the 2024 season. Storm King provides a unique opportunity for students to encounter modern and contemporary art while immersed in nature. Inquiry-based tours create opportunities for multi-sensory, multi-disciplinary learning. Freelance Educators lead tours that encourage close looking and create a safe and compelling space for students, teachers, and chaperones to explore their ideas and observations together.

Storm King welcomes over 10,000 people as part of group visits each season and offers over 200 group tours. School visits peak mid-May to mid-June and from October to mid-November.

Primary/Essential Responsibilities and Duties:

• Lead dynamic, inquiry-based, thematic tours for K-12 school groups outdoors at Storm King Art Center
• Deliver tours that are responsive to a group’s needs and interests while staying true to Storm King’s stated learning goals
• Develop new routes for unique requests
• Attend training sessions at Storm King Art Center annually and study resources to prepare for tours.
• Contribute to program evaluation by reporting on group visits to Storm King staff as requested
• Connect group with Storm King staff to meet practical onsite needs (wayfinding, first aid, etc.)

Other Responsibilities and Duties

• Understanding schedule of group to help direct them onsite as needed.

Required Skills and Qualifications

• Experience teaching in a museum setting
• Experience in a role with direct engagement with K-12 audiences
• Experience leading inquiry-based discussions or lessons
• Knowledge of modern and contemporary art
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Commitment to inclusion and access
• Ability to be flexible and responsive while centering learning goals
• Ability to work independently and be nimble in response to problems

Preferred Skills and Qualifications

• Undergraduate degree in Visual Art, Art History, Museum Studies, Education, or related field, or active artistic practice with exhibition history
• Knowledge of or interest in landscape and ecology
• Fluency in Spanish or ASL a plus
• CPR/Red Cross First Aid training a plus

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

• Ability to maneuver outdoors, in all weather conditions, on 500 acres of hills, grass, and gravel paths
• Ability to be outdoors for long periods of time during school visits
• Ability to use a two-way radio
• Frequently stands for long periods of time
• Occasional lifting, stooping, or bending

Compensation and Benefits

Our freelance rate is $75 per tour plus $30 per hour for meetings and required training. This position is not eligible for benefits, other than those required by law.
