Position Overview: A Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is a mental health professional specialized in helping individuals, couples, and families overcome challenges and improve their relationships. MFTs utilize psychotherapy techniques to address a wide range of emotional, behavioral, and relational issues within the context of family systems. They work in various settings including private practice, mental health clinics, hospitals, schools, and community organizations.


Key Responsibilities:

Conducting Therapy Sessions:

  • Meet with client couples, or families to assess their needs and develop treatment plans.
  • Utilize evidence-based therapeutic techniques to address relationship issues, communication problems, mental health disorders, and other concerns.
  • Facilitate sessions to help clients explore emotions, improve coping skills, and implement healthier behaviors.

Family Systems Assessment:

  • Assess clients family dynamics and patterns of interaction to understand underlying issues affecting relationships.
  • Identify patterns of behavior, communication styles, and relational dynamics that contribute to conflicts or distress within the family unit.

Individual and Group Therapy:

  • Provide individual counseling to address personal issues such as depression, anxiety, trauma, or grief.
  • Conduct group therapy sessions focusing on specific topics such as parenting skills, anger management, or family conflict resolution.

Collaborative Approach:

  • Collaborate with other mental health professionals, such as psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, or counselors, to coordinate comprehensive care for clients.
  • Work closely with clients' support networks, including family members, teachers, and healthcare providers, to enhance treatment outcomes.

Crisis Intervention:

  • Offer crisis intervention services to individuals or families experiencing acute stress, trauma, or emotional crises.
  • Provide immediate support and guidance to help clients navigate challenging situations and access appropriate resources.

Documentation and Record-Keeping:

Maintain accurate and confidential client records, including assessment notes, treatment plans, progress reports, and session summaries.

  • Adhere to ethical and legal guidelines regarding client confidentiality and record-keeping practices.

Professional Development:

  • Stay informed about current research, developments, and best practices in the field of marriage and family therapy.
  • Participate in continuing education activities, workshops, and seminars to enhance clinical skills and knowledge.
Requirements:

  • Master's or doctoral degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, Counseling Psychology, Clinical Social Work, or related field.
  • State licensure or certification as a Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT or equivalent).
  • Clinical experience in providing therapy to individuals, couples, and families.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish rapport with diverse clients.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Proficiency in conducting assessments, developing treatment plans, and implementing therapeutic interventions.
  • Knowledge of ethical standards and legal regulations governing the practice of therapy.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and self-care.
