Family therapists, or marriage and family therapists, provide counseling sessions for families that are working through challenges. Common family issues can include drug abuse, alcohol abuse, separation, divorce, and financial problems. In some cases, the difficulties can be very traumatic for the family. The primary objective of the family therapist is to improve communication and understanding of the issues among family members so that they can work towards a resolution. Therapists may be required to hold a multitude of sessions that can include individual and group settings.
