Family Therapist Intern information

What does a family therapist intern do?

A Family Therapist Intern is a graduate student or recent graduate in the process of obtaining supervised clinical experience required for licensure as a family therapist. They work with individuals, couples, and families to address relationship issues, communication problems, and emotional challenges. Under the supervision of a licensed therapist, interns conduct therapy sessions, develop treatment plans, and learn essential counseling skills. Their work helps clients improve family dynamics and overall mental health while the intern gains practical experience in the field.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a family therapist intern?

To thrive as a Family Therapist Intern, you need foundational knowledge in psychology or counseling, strong observational skills, and enrollment in or completion of a graduate program in marriage and family therapy. Familiarity with case management software, therapeutic assessment tools, and compliance with HIPAA regulations is typically required. Active listening, empathy, and the ability to build trust with diverse clients are standout soft skills for this role. These abilities ensure ethical, effective support for families navigating complex emotional and relational challenges.

What types of supervision and support can a family therapist intern expect during their internship?

As a Family Therapist Intern, you will typically receive regular supervision from a licensed family therapist or clinical supervisor. This usually involves weekly one-on-one or group meetings to discuss cases, review techniques, and ensure ethical practice. Supervisors provide feedback, guidance, and support to help you develop your clinical skills and navigate challenging situations. Interns often collaborate closely with other interns and multidisciplinary team members, creating a supportive environment for professional growth.
