Respite Specialist

Job Summary:

The Respite Specialist is responsible for the care, hygiene, health, training, development, safety and supervision of the participants of Harbor House services and programs.

This position reports to the Program Manager.

Duties/Responsibilities:

· Provide supervision of participants in community and during respite activities at all times.

· Assist in providing regularly scheduled activities in a non-residential setting that are designed to foster the acquisition of skills, build positive social behavior and interpersonal competence, and foster greater independence and personal choice

· Provide active training designed to prepare a participant to transition from school to adult responsibilities, community integration and work

· Offer identified opportunities that enable the participant to develop the ability to communicate effectively with others, such as supervisors, co-workers, and customers (the public)

· Regular attendance at program meetings to discuss plans and developments affecting program area.

· Must complete required training for administration of participant medications (when applicable)

· Must be able to assist participants in need of assistance with their personal care and other daily living activities.

· May assist participants in the community during their weekend shift. This may be going out to eat, to the mall, movies, park, etc.

· Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

· Good verbal and written communication skills.

· Good organizational skills and attention to detail.

Education and Experience:

· High School diploma or GED required

· One year’s experience in the field of developmental disabilities preferred or CNA certification

· Must be able to acquire and maintain CPR and First Aid Certification.

· Must possess driver’s license and auto insurance levels required by the organization.

Physical Requirements:

· Alternating periods of sitting, standing and walking for up to 8 hour shifts.

· Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times.
