How much do industrial hygiene jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 2, 2026, the average yearly pay for industrial hygiene in the United States is $57,056.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $47,000.00 and $63,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Is industrial hygiene a good career?

Industrial hygiene is a viable career that involves identifying and controlling workplace hazards to protect worker health. It typically requires knowledge of safety standards, environmental monitoring tools, and certifications such as the Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH). The field offers opportunities in manufacturing, construction, and government sectors with a focus on safety and compliance.

What are some common challenges faced by industrial hygienists when implementing workplace safety programs?

Industrial hygienists often encounter challenges such as gaining buy-in from employees and management, staying updated with evolving regulations, and effectively communicating technical findings to non-specialists. Additionally, balancing the need for comprehensive hazard assessments with limited resources and time constraints can be demanding. Successful industrial hygienists use strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills to overcome these obstacles and foster a culture of safety within their organizations.

What is industrial hygiene?

Industrial hygiene is the science of anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, and controlling workplace conditions that may cause workers' injury or illness. Industrial hygienists focus on identifying physical, chemical, and biological hazards in the workplace and implementing measures to reduce or eliminate those risks. They use various methods, such as air sampling, noise monitoring, and ergonomic assessments, to protect worker health and ensure compliance with safety regulations. Their work plays a crucial role in creating safer and healthier work environments across a wide range of industries.

Where do industrial hygienists make the most money?

Industrial hygienists tend to earn the highest salaries in industries such as oil and gas, manufacturing, and chemical processing, especially in roles requiring advanced certifications like CIH and experience with specialized monitoring tools. Salaries are also higher in regions with a strong industrial presence and stricter safety regulations. Factors such as experience, education, and certifications influence earning potential across different locations and sectors.

What does an industrial hygienist do?

An industrial hygienist identifies, evaluates, and controls workplace hazards such as chemical, physical, biological, and ergonomic risks to ensure worker safety and health. They conduct inspections, collect samples, analyze data, and recommend safety measures, often using tools like air sampling equipment and safety protocols. Certification, such as the Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), is commonly required for the role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Industrial Hygienist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Industrial Hygienist, you need a solid grounding in occupational health, environmental science, and hazard assessment, typically supported by a relevant bachelor's degree and, often, certification like CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist). Familiarity with tools such as air sampling equipment, noise dosimeters, and industrial hygiene software is essential for monitoring workplace hazards. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you identify risks and convey findings to diverse stakeholders. These competencies are crucial for protecting worker health, ensuring regulatory compliance, and fostering safer work environments.

What can you do with an industrial hygiene degree?

An industrial hygiene degree prepares individuals for roles such as industrial hygienist, safety officer, or environmental health specialist, focusing on identifying and controlling workplace hazards. Graduates often work in manufacturing, construction, or healthcare settings, utilizing skills in hazard assessment, air sampling, and safety protocols, sometimes requiring certifications like CIH or CSP.

What is the difference between Industrial Hygiene vs Occupational Health?

AspectIndustrial HygieneOccupational Health
CertificationsCIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist), ASP (Associate Safety Professional)CHP (Certified in Occupational Health and Safety), OHST (Occupational Health and Safety Technician)
Work EnvironmentWorkplaces with chemical, biological, or physical hazards, focusing on exposure assessmentBroader health concerns, including injury prevention, wellness programs, and overall worker health
Industry UsagePrimarily in manufacturing, construction, and chemical industriesHealthcare, government agencies, and various industries emphasizing overall worker health

Industrial Hygiene and Occupational Health both aim to protect workers but differ in focus. Industrial Hygiene concentrates on identifying and controlling workplace hazards to prevent exposure, while Occupational Health encompasses a broader approach to overall worker health, including injury prevention and wellness. Understanding these differences helps employers and professionals choose the right career path or safety strategies.
