WHAT YOU'LL DO

The Associate Technical Director supports the Technical Director in budgeting, drafting, scheduling, and overseeing construction, load-in, and strike of scenery for all productions.

MINIMUM/CORE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum BFA Degree in Technical Theater or equivalent training and experience.
  • 3 years experience in a professional scene shop, preferably in a supervisory capacity.

SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in safe engineering of scenery and scenic construction techniques including carpentry, welding, and theatrical and arena rigging.
  • Extensive experience creating technical drawings in AutoCAD (or equivalent drafting software) and knowledge of theatrical drafting standards.
  • Ability to develop and implement plans for builds, load-ins, and strikes including scheduling and hiring personnel.
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills including written and verbal communication, as well as demonstrated organizational skills.
  • Mechanical knowledge and experience, as it applies to theatrical effects including winches, hydraulics, and pneumatics involving complex integration across multiple axes.
  • Ability to adapt to frequently changing circumstances, work collaboratively with other employees and guest artists, and maintain a positive attitude in challenging situations.
  • Working knowledge of Word, Excel, Outlook
  • Experience with CNC Routers, Creative Conners and JR Clancy automation systems preferred

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to lift 60lbs, and able to climb and work from lifts/ladders with or without assistance and/or reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to work at a computer monitor for extended periods of time; up to 8 hours a day.
  • Ability to perform work that requires frequent and repetitive use of wrists and hands with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • This position has irregular hours with regular night and weekend responsibilities. It can include long periods of remaining seated or walking.

KEY FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Serve as primary liaison between scenic designers of ASSIGNED productions (secondary on all not assigned productions) and the scene shop by communicating design objectives; facilitating questions and solutions; and striving to realize the designer's plans and concepts within the constraints of the production process.
  • Under the supervision of the Technical Director, generate and update construction and load-in plans and drawings.
  • Coordinate with Scene Shop Supervisor in planning construction, load-in, and strike of all scenery.
  • Attend meetings, Technical Rehearsals and Previews as assigned by the Technical Director.
  • Assist the Technical Director in maintenance of stages, scene shop, equipment, and inventory
  • As time permits, assist in maintenance or general building projects requiring special skills.
