Job Description

ESI is seeking a Senior Controls Engineer. This role centers on designing, installing and testing control system solutions to solve our clients’ most pressing and complex problems. Responsibilities include developing designs for control system upgrades, including test plans, and specifications, control system configuration and programming, and performing engineering analysis and calculations. This role will also provide the opportunity to participate in project meetings to foster relationships and ensure timely execution of engineering activities while mastering regulatory requirements and industry standards for digital I&C systems. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Develop specifications and functional requirements for procurement of computer-based I&C systems.
  • Configure and/or program control systems and control system components for a variety of different platforms
  • Prepare Engineering Change Packages (ECP) to replace/upgrade obsolete analog-based I&C systems with modern computer-based I&C systems and components.
    • ECP preparation includes: develop/revise associated documentation (e.g., specifications, system descriptions, cabinet/panel layout diagrams, wiring/cable termination diagrams, bill of materials (BOM), part lists, vendor instruction manuals, operations manuals, etc.).
  • Prepare test plans and detailed test instructions
  • Perform engineering calculations and analysis (e.g., Failure Modes and Effect Analysis (FMEA), Qualitative Assessments (evaluate reliability of computer-based systems), response time analysis, instrument setpoint and uncertainty calculations, instrument drift analysis, etc.).
  • Prepare design studies, project scopes and engineering estimates.
  • Prepare procurement and installation specifications and can evaluate technical bids and select equipment.
  • Direct and oversee routine and advanced technical work performed by others on assigned projects and maintains quality standards of all assigned projects.
  • Participate in reviewing and checking designs, drawings and data prepared by other engineers or subcontractors.
  • Manage budget, scope, schedule, and quality associated with the designated work assignment with minimal guidance and technical oversight.
  • Participate in project meetings, working interactively with colleagues and clients to develop strong relationships.
  • Plan and implement the timely execution of assigned engineering activities.
  • Understand roles played by other disciplines on the project and is able to coordinate and interface with other engineering disciplines.
  • Devise new approaches to technical problems. Broad knowledge of precedents in the industry.

Desired skills and experience:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering (BSCSE), or related field in Engineering from an accredited university.
  • Minimum 7 years’ with control system or I&C design and installation experience, preferably at power stations or heavy industrial facilities.
  • Experience with configuration and/or programming of DCS and/or PLC based control systems (i.e., Foxboro, Ovation, DeltaV, etc. and/or Woodward Micronet, Rockwell, Siemens etc.)
  • Experience in the design, installation, and testing of large scale (complete systems) digital control and computer monitoring system upgrades. Types of upgrades include replacement of Turbine/Generator Control Systems with DCS platforms, process computer, and cyber security systems.
  • Direct involvement in the entire digital upgrade life cycle including feasibility studies, procurement specifications, design change packages, FAT/SAT test procedure development, installation, and testing.
  • Working knowledge of the application of current regulatory and industry digital upgrade standards.
  • Knowledge of digital hardware and software components commonly used in digital I&C system platforms, such as: Central Processing Units (CPUs), Input/Output (I/O) modules, fiberoptic modules, network interface modules, switch/router modules, servers, and Human Machine Interface (HMI) equipment such as thin client workstations, touch screen displays, and their applications in digital I&C systems.
  • An aptitude for technical problem solving, strong interpersonal skills, written and oral communication, experience working in a team environment, and a client service focus.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks while working effectively with all levels of staff and management.
  • Strong analytical ability and problem identification/problem resolution skills.Ability to lead design projects and interface with internal and external stakeholders to complete a project within defined scope, schedule, and budget constraints
  • Willing to travel and participate in design meetings, field installation, checkout, and start-up.
    • Ability to travel between up to 25% of the time; duration of travel may vary depending on project and client needs, ranging from a few days to a few weeks.
  • Proficient in Word and Excel.
  • Good writing, presentation and communication skills.
  • AutoCAD experience desired.
  • Professional Engineer License desired.
