POSITION SUMMARY:

Substation General Foreman will report directly to the Substation Superintendent.

This position is a leadership role. The Substation General Foreman position requires an experienced technician to work in energized high voltage substations. This position is responsible for the direction, guidance, safety, health, and welfare of all site staff. This includes documentation and execution of the day-to-day field operational needs of the individual project. It requires an experienced individual that demonstrates working safely inside a substation near energized bus and equipment. As a reliable construction supervisor, you will be overseeing and directing electrical substation construction projects from conception to completion, reviewing the project in-depth, and overseeing offsite constructions to monitor compliance with building and safety regulations for multiple crews in a service area.

This position will lay out work and ensure materials, tools, equipment, and information are on the job site in the proper locations to meet construction schedules. The position interacts with Superintendent or Project Manager and may oversee complete installation on smaller projects. They ensure safe working conditions, that everyone is trained, and understands all job hazards and what is taking place concerning productivity.

This position is designated as a safety sensitive position.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Observe, comply with, and promote BRP's Safety Program, rules, requirements, and corporate safety goals.
  • Participate in all safety-related processes, programs, and training, as requested.
  • Engage with your work team to ensure we achieve zero injuries.
  • Must understand electrical hazards associated with transmission and distribution voltages within substation construction.
  • Ensure all emergency phone numbers are understood, the location of the closest hospitals, and which route to take in an emergency.
  • Cooperate and work with Safety Department to ensure safety incidents are investigated openly and honestly.
  • Identify safety hazards you or other employees may be subject to and take all necessary corrective action to eliminate or mitigate the hazards. Understand and respond appropriately to all safety hazards and warning devices (i.e., backup alarms, the smell of smoke, different colored warning tags, warning sirens).
  • Gain a complete understanding of the scope of work and the related parts of the project.
  • Provide on-site administrative & technical management of field-related construction activities for high voltage substation projects.
  • Examine/inspect field conditions and identify problems, inaccuracies, and cost-saving measures that may be encountered.
  • Can monitor work progress for substation crew and subcontractors, as needed.
  • Inventory, record keeping, organization, tracking, and required materials usage.
  • Complete weekly and monthly reporting to the Project Manager.
  • Be able to create and execute a three-week schedule.
  • Understand the scheduling, material control, and unit man-hour performance reporting.
  • Be able to review and approve crew goals based on the project unit rates.
  • Knowledge to accurately oversee time reporting and proper coding of time sheets.
  • Participate in quantity report collection as needed on a daily/weekly basis.
  • Perform task planning to safely and efficiently carry out all aspects of that work assigned.
  • Complete other employee documentation as necessary (discipline, time off, evaluations, etc.).
  • Ensure all paperwork is completed timely and accurately.
  • Collect daily pre-job safety planning for reporting.
  • Attend daily toolbox meetings and communicate safety concerns, work scope, plans, and schedules to the crews.
  • Must understand, be familiar with, and can read wiring diagrams and schematics as well as the applicable ANSI, IEEE, NESC, and OSHA standards, etc.
  • Oversee all phases of substation construction on high and low voltage equipment, including but not limited to: reading and understanding schematic diagrams and construction drawings, construction of foundations, erecting structures, installation of busses, switches, breakers, transformers, voltage regulators, capacitors, circuit switchers, AC and DC secondary voltage systems, conduit, and cable raceways, grounding systems, pulling and terminating of cable, installation of control metering and relay panels, etc.
  • Understand, support, and follow lockout tag-out procedures.
  • Plan and communicate with the Superintendent to ensure an adequate supply and availability of tools, materials, and equipment.
  • Ensure tool maintenance, upkeep, and service are being completed.
  • Knowledge and use and safe handling of tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Employee training and documentation (written and signed) for the safe operation of each piece of equipment or tool.
  • Ensure that construction equipment is correctly operated, maintained, and in good working order, and Daily Equipment Inspections are completed for equipment being used.
  • Be able to perform all principal duties and accountabilities of craft workers under their supervision.
  • Assure employees produce quality work, meeting requirements of plans, specifications, and industry standards.
  • Train/teach safety practices, policies, and procedures related to an employee's assigned tasks.
  • Provide on-the-job training and mentoring to individuals on the crew.
  • Ensure all communications internally and externally are provided promptly and professionally. Keep the Superintendent informed of the jobs' status and the estimated completion timeline.
  • Professional Conduct – Model and encourage the pursuit of company values through examples of leadership, honesty, integrity, and respect.
  • Ensure that job locations are left in a neat and safe condition at the end of each shift and after work completion.
  • Has ability/knowledge to evaluate fellow employees' work performance fairly.
  • Performs other duties as required.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • 5 years of recent electrician experience as a Substation Foreman or equivalent combination of education and experience in electrical construction.
  • Valid Journeyman certification or equivalent experience to provide the skills necessary to perform the work of a Journeyman Substation Technician.
  • Diploma/certificate from High School, GED, or Line school required.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Must have Class A or B CDL or ability to obtain one.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of substation construction and crew control.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of electric system components and related communications and protection functions.
  • Familiar with construction equipment, including skid steers, man lifts, boom trucks, forklifts, backhoes, and trenchers.
  • Demonstrated practical leadership skills, including mentoring, coaching, and developing employees in a team environment.
  • Ability to lead and communicate effectively with crew
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze performance, process improvements, and standardization activities.
  • Ability to plan and see the "big picture."
  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of construction management processes means and methods.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMAND:

  • May require lifting/carrying items up to 30 pounds.
  • Work is performed outside and includes exposure to extreme cold, heat, inclement weather & noise.
  • Willing to work in various locations across the state/country and for extended periods when required. Travel up to 95%.
  • Must have the endurance necessary to perform these duties throughout a standard eight (8) or ten (10) hour day according to the schedule.
  • Be on time and ready to work at the start of each standard shift.
  • Must always wear personnel protective equipment. (i.e., Hard hats, safety glasses, safety harnesses, ear protection, fire retardant clothing, as required) and respirators when required.
