St. Mary's University School of Law invites applications for full-time Assistant Professors of Practice in two academic programs: the Legal Writing and Practice Program, and the Bar Exam Success Program. The start date is August 1, 2024. All positions are nine-month, full-time, non-tenure track positions. Professors of Practice will be hired for a two-year contract with renewal for good performance at the end of that term. Salary for a nine-month contract will range from $70,000 to $89,000, commensurate with experience.

Assistant Professor of Practice of Law, Legal Writing and Practice Program: Professors of Practice will teach approximately 30-40 1L students in Legal Writing and Practice. Legal Writing and Practice combines traditional legal research and writing with oral advocacy, and professional and academic skills development. Professors of Practice also help plan and participate in interventions for at-risk 1L students.

Assistant Professor of Practice, Bar Exam Success Program: Professors of Practice in the Bar Exam Success Program will teach upper-level courses, including Bar Preparation for Credit. The Professors of Practice hired for this position will also participate in our bar coaching program. The Bar Exam Success Program involves extensive student meetings, planning and execution of workshops, data tracking, and providing feedback on written work throughout the February and July bar cycles.

Both Positions: Successful Professors of Practice are team-oriented and collaborative, committed to excellence in teaching and academic support, and demonstrate passionate dedication to their students. These positions are student-facing and require a campus presence, except when teaching on-line classes.

Professors of Practice will, among other things, participate on committees, teach classes, regularly meet with individual students, and provide extensive feedback on written work. Professors of Practice also assist with academic workshops, orientation planning and execution, and course planning and materials for the future academic year. St. Mary's has a full-time day and online part-time evening program, and Professors of Practice will teach in either or both based on the needs of the office. Assistant Professors of Practice in the Legal Writing and Practice Program report to the Director of the Legal Writing and Practice Program. Assistant Professors of Practice in the Bar Exam Success Program report to the Director of Bar Exam Success.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • D. degree from an accredited law school and admission to at least one state bar
  • Strong academic record and excellent writing skills
  • At least two years of legal work experience post-JD graduation

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Aptitude for, or experience in, teaching bar-related skills, legal research and writing, and/or providing academic support
  • Experience on a law journal and/or judicial clerkship experience
