We seek a highly motivated and experienced Data Engineering Manager to join our Data Engineering team. The successful candidate will be responsible for assuming a technical leadership role in maintaining and enhancing our analytics and reporting products. The selected candidate will manage a team of data engineers as a player-coach, overseeing the development of next-generation analytics tools, providing troubleshooting support, and identifying opportunities for refinement in our processes and products. The responsibilities will include building and managing a high-performing team of engineers and delivering performant analytics tools that ensure data availability, integrity, and security. Strong SQL skills, experience with analytics tools such as Looker, Tableau, or Qlik, and proficiency in scripting languages such as Python or R are required. In addition, the candidate should have proven experience in deploying analytics solutions in the cloud, with the ability to understand and work with various data environments.

Compensation:

We are committed to providing competitive pay and benefits that are in line with industry standards. We analyze and carefully consider several factors when determining compensation, including skills, qualifications and professional experience, which can cause your compensation to vary. This role has an annual targeted total compensation range of $110,000 - $140,000 which includes variable compensation (bonus) eligibility.

About the Data Engineering Team:

Our Data Engineering team at Bitfocus is central to our mission of using data to help end homelessness. We develop, maintain, and enhance analytics and reporting products for our Homeless Management Information Systems (HMIS). Collaborating closely with product management, engineering, and customer success teams, we design and implement advanced analytics tools to deliver high-performance, scalable solutions that provide meaningful insights for our clients. We work with large datasets while ensuring data availability, integrity, and security, utilizing technologies such as SQL, Python, R and analytics tools like Looker, Tableau, and Qlik.

As a Data Engineering Manager, you will:
  • Manage a team and provide guidance, support, and performance management to ensure successful completion of projects and achievement of team objectives.
  • Lead collaboration with cross-functional teams to develop, deploy, and implement tools necessary to improve data integration and migration processes. This includes identifying and evaluating new technologies, as well as improving existing tools and processes to increase efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Lead the development and refinement of our analytics platform, ensuring optimal performance and scalability as our data grows. Collaborate closely with software engineers, database administrators, and other stakeholders to ensure sound architecture and effective data handling.
  • Drive the automation of processes to streamline data quality control and improve efficiency. Develop automated unit-testing processes and data cleansing tools to minimize human error, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of data.
  • Assist individuals and communities in transforming their data into actionable insights. Work with community organizations to gather, analyze, and interpret data, enabling better decision-making and social impact.
  • Ensure data adheres to HUD policies and procedures and meets HUD standards for the data structure. Implement best practices for HMIS data analysis, contributing to tracking homeless populations across the United States.
  • Lead and complete ad-hoc projects, including data-related issue identification and resolution, development of new data-driven solutions, and collaboration with other teams to improve data management processes.
What you bring:
  • People Management Skills: Ability to lead, mentor, and motivate team members, fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment. Experience in resolving conflicts, providing constructive feedback, and delegating tasks effectively to optimize team performance and achieve project objectives.
  • Programming Languages: Experience with SQL and Python and a strong foundation in programming concepts. The candidate should also have experience working with relational databases to store and manage large datasets.
  • Social Services/HMIS: Experience in social services and/or HMIS is essential for a Data Engineer working in the homeless services field. Familiarity with the issues and challenges that homeless populations face will help you better understand and analyze the data related to this field.
  • Data: Strong love for data and data-driven decision-making. Should be able to analyze complex datasets, identify patterns, and draw insights to inform decision-making processes.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills. This includes communicating technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Teamwork: Supporting and collaborating with solid technical competence, enjoys working with others, and values achieving common goals.
  • Remote Environment: Experience working in a completely remote company, coordinating with team members across different time zones.
  • Independent Work: Demonstrates self-direction and a results-oriented approach, capable of working independently and collaboratively to complete projects on time and deliver high-quality outcomes.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Possesses excellent interpersonal skills for effective communication with stakeholders.
  • Technology: Familiarity with a range of technologies, including databases, data visualization tools, and programming languages, and willingness to learn new technologies.
We're excited about you because:
  • You have at least 7 years of experience in a data modeling or business intelligence environment.
  • You have strong SQL skills, including writing complex queries and stored procedures.
  • You are proficient in data analytics tools such as Looker, Tableau, or Qlik.
  • You have experience with scripting languages such as Python or R.
  • You have experience deploying cloud-native data solutions, especially in AWS.
  • You have in-depth knowledge of data systems, data relationships, and data modeling, and you can understand and adapt to various data environments.
  • You have experience in planning and organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail.
  • You have experience handling multiple concurrent projects and prioritizing in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
  • You have experience working in a social services or HMIS environment is (strongly preferred).
  • You have experience building and maintaining data warehouse solutions (strongly preferred).
  • You have experience with TypeScript, React, or Angular (preferred).
  • You have a college degree in information systems, computer science, mathematics, finance, accounting, statistics, or a related field and/or equivalent experience
