Wellness/In-School Suspension Assistant, Charlotte Lab School | 2023-2024

Responsibilities

Typical duties of a Lab Wellness/In-School Suspension Assistant include:

  • Provide supervision and management of the in-school suspension program;
  • Guide students assigned to in-school suspension through the restorative process, including facilitating student-creation and implementation of a restorative plan aligned to the designated infraction;
  • Acts as an advocate for students by providing one on one/group therapeutic processing sessions, assessment of student's needs, individual behavior planning, personal goal setting, weekly follow-ups with students and other school based supports as needed;
  • Observes, documents and maintains data regarding student behavior and attendance beyond the compliance level; 
  • Evaluates student information and makes recommendations as needed;
  • Establishes rapport and working relationships with students, staff, parents, and other community agencies in an effort to promote the best possible outcome for the student in the shortest possible time frame;
  • Serves as a liaison between the student, parents, Lab staff, community agencies and other educational programs; assists students, parents, staff and community agencies in understanding Lab’s policies, procedures and guidelines;
  • Leads and models restorative practices, including providing support/coaching for students and staff;
  • Implements behavior and emotional management programs, enabling students to acquire social and interpersonal behaviors that will enhance their academic success; assists teachers and administrators to develop current behavior management strategies;
  • Assists with the day-to-day culture-building and discipline, discusses student concerns with appropriate school staff and community agencies, assists with coordinating activities for parents and responds to requests for assistance and information;
  • Provides immediate practical assistance to students in an effort to increase necessary social, behavioral, and academic skills needed to be successful in a variety of educational settings; 
  • Implements social skills/character education, wellness and mindfulness practices and curriculum; provides individual and group instruction to students regarding appropriate social skills and behaviors; proactively monitors behavior by observing and interacting with students.
  • Maintains accurate log of student progress, relative behavior and social skills development;
  • Assists in the identification of students who demonstrate a need for participation in programs provided by community-based human services agencies;
  • Responds to crisis and routine calls for assistance from staff and/or students; diffuses and de-escalates potentially volatile situations;
  • Addresses the needs of EC students appropriately and in accordance with Individual Education Plans (IEP's);
  • Ensures that the physical environment of the school reinforces school culture and facilitates student achievement;
  • Assists with the implementation of all Title IX policies and processes, including identification, determination, investigation, reporting, and documentation of all Title IX violations;
  • Performs related duties as assigned.


Lab Wellness Assistants should also display the following skills and knowledge:

  • Knowledge of crisis intervention techniques and restorative behavior management principles.
  • Ability to develop and implement effective individual and group behavior support plans.
  • Ability to collect and summarize data to document student progress by observing and charting behaviors and measuring the duration and frequency of inappropriate behavior.
  • Ability to provide support to faculty in building relationships with students and establishing management procedures
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
  • Effective de-escalation skills.
  • Ability to receive and give actionable feedback to teachers.
  • Ability to use Google Apps and computer programs.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work with adolescents and families.
  • Ability to effectively explain Lab’s culture and discipline policies and procedures.
  • Ability to analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and implement recommendations in support of Lab’s organizational goals.


The Charlotte Lab Wellness Assistant will have responsibilities in support of Charlotte Lab Schools’ organizational vision: 

  • Participate in the Student Services and Grade Level team meetings and communicate regularly through systems designed for your team
  • Participate actively in Lab’s community activities, in support of Lab’s instructional, community-building, fundraising, family recruitment, and hiring efforts;
  • Participate actively in ongoing professional development and teacher evaluation process;
  • Supervise students and assist in the maintenance of a clean, orderly, and safe school environment;
  • Take on other responsibilities as needed, and as assigned, to ensure student and school success.


General responsibilities of all Lab faculty and staff members are to:

  • Attend and participate in team meetings and communicate regularly through systems designed for your team;
  • Participate actively in Lab’s community activities, in support of Lab’s instructional, community-building, fundraising, and family recruitment efforts;
  • Participate actively in ongoing professional development;
  • Assist in the maintenance of a clean, orderly, and safe school environment;
  • Take on other responsibilities as needed, and as assigned, to ensure student and organizational success.


Members of Charlotte Lab School’s Wellness & Culture Team who have instructional backgrounds may be asked to serve as Advisors to a group of students, with responsibilities in support of Lab’s vision for social-emotional learning, including the following:

  • Deliver a social-emotional skills curriculum;
  • Develop deep relationships with students in your advisory;
  • Develop and implement activities to build community within the advisory;
  • Serve as an advocate for advisees, for both academic and disciplinary reasons;
  • Provide regular updates and communication with advisees’ families;
  • Guide advisees in the preparation of their Student-Led Conferences each trimester;
  • Operate as liaison between advisees’ families and the school.


Qualifications

Candidates for Student Services Assistant MUST:

  • Be able/willing to learn how to fulfill the responsibilities listed above;
  • ​Hold a high school diploma with additional specialized trainings/certifications or two years of related college coursework.;
  • Demonstrate experience in, or passion for, working with diverse populations.


In addition, the Lab School Hiring Committee will look favorably upon candidates who:

  • Are trained or licensed in restorative practices, trauma-informed practices, and Active Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI);
  • Have a least 2 years of relevant experience in a mental health or human service program preferably working with behaviorally complex children;
  • Have a bachelor’s degree in Social Services or a related field;
  • Have comfort with technology and experience with Google Apps for Education;
  • Demonstrate ability to work in a dynamic, fast paced, start-up environment both independently and as part of a team; and
  • Demonstrate experience in, or passion for, working with diverse populations
  • Additionally, all applicants will be evaluated based on Charlotte Lab School’s Faculty Competencies


Compensation

Charlotte Lab School offers competitive compensation commensurate with experience and education level using our compensation rubric. All salaries are determined pending verification of experience by our Finance/HR divisions and Board of Directors budget approval. Please note the following regarding use of the rubric:

  • Assistant, instructional, dean and counselor salaries (Grades 1-4) are determined based on 1 year credit for 1 year of teaching and/or other relevant experience. Increased pay for advanced degrees (which may include specialized leadership programs or certifications) is indicated above and paid on the basis on completion of qualifying programs.
  • Leadership salaries (Grades 5 and above) are determined based on 1 year credit for 1 year of leadership experience, and .5 year credit for each year of teaching experience. Advanced degrees are assumed, so not considered in this scale. 

The position also includes medical insurance for the employee, with voluntary dental and vision plans, and spouse/family coverage. Lab also provides access to a Flexible Spending Account for health and childcare expenses and an opportunity to contribute to a 403b retirement plan. Lab provides employees 10 PTO days each year (1/month). Full time Charlotte Lab School faculty members also receive priority in the student admissions process.
