Job Description

As a hand-on, working supervisor, provide exceptional care in maintaining the grounds of Oglebay as to attract guests and add to the aesthetic value of the Wheeling Park Commission

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Interact with the public in a cheerful and positive attitude, solve guest problems and complaints in a proper manner, and maintain harmonious working relationships with fellow employees and external contractors
  • Coordinates with Grounds Manager to direct and work alongside staff on a day-to-day basis to ensure job tasks are correctly completed in an efficient manner
  • Assists manager with hiring process, employee disciplinary action, and any other personnel issues if needed
  • Assists in managing employees by observing work to be completed, instructs employees how to complete work by explaining and/or physically showing how, and inspects work for completion
  • Must have general landscaping knowledge
  • Must be able to operate tractors, mowers, skid steer, aerial lifts, and other pieces of equipment
  • Train new employees on proper usage and maintenance on all necessary grounds equipment such as trucks, trailers, blowers, chainsaws, string trimmers, edgers, utility carts, tractors, mowers, rototillers, snow blowers, etc.
  • Able to use hand tools for grounds maintenance such as shovel, trowel, rake, cultivator, posthole digger, broom, axe, forks, pruners, loppers and shears
  • General knowledge of maintaining irrigation systems
  • General knowledge of plant materials, and is able to make decisions regarding plant installations, pruning, and removal
  • Assists manager by overseeing flower bed maintenance issues
  • Ability to lead staff while planting flower beds by following directions and schematics
  • Plant, water, maintain flowers, and other plants
  • Plants and prunes shrubs and trees properly using aerial lifts if needed
  • Removes fallen trees and limbs, and assists with the removal of dead and/or damaged trees and shrubs
  • Assists in maintaining interiorscapes
  • Assists manager in monitoring plants for pests, diseases and other issues
  • Maintains turfgrass by mowing, trimming, and edging walkways, and applying fertilizers, and pesticides as needed
  • Snow removal and ice control from roadways, parking lots, driveways, and walk ways by using tractors, snow plows, shovels, brooms and ice chemical
  • Ability to obtain WV Certified Public Applicators License (pesticides) within 6 months of employment
  • Knowledge of chemicals, fertilizers and pesticides, applications of such and the calibration for applying materials
  • Instruct employees on pesticide use
  • Apply pesticides as needed
  • Assist manager with IPM programs/SDS record keeping
  • Split, stack, and deliver firewood
  • Trash collection park-wide through cottages, roadways, parking lots, shelters, and other assigned areas
  • Keep grounds, drainage ditches, and culverts free of litter and debris (including dead animals)
  • Maintain clearance, make minor repairs, and paint fences and gates
  • Trains employees on all equipment and departmental procedures
  • Assists in setups and tear downs for special events
  • Assists in payroll completion and budget observation as needed
  • Assist with other jobs as directed

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Directly supervises up to 15 employees in Horticulture and Festival of Lights Maintenance departments. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
