Job Description

PURPOSE OF POSITION: To focus on the educational goals and progress of the Youth in assigned program(s), and to represent the Agency at schools and with external educational resources.

Schedule: Mon-Fri, with 2 late nights per week until 7:30pm. 2 optional remote days per month.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least 21 years of age.
  • Bachelor’s degree in education, psychology, social work, special education, or a related field.
  • Experience in all aspects of providing educational services for behavioral and emotionally disturbed adolescents in a residential or community based program that has a multi ethnic/racial population.
  • A valid Illinois driver’s license, ability to drive a van, maintain a clear driving record, and retain driving approval through the department of Children and Family Services.
  • Regular and predictable attendance.
  • Ability to work both independently and as an active team member.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.  Must exhibit an appreciation and respect for a diverse work environment, inclusive of youth, families and co-workers from many social, economic, cultural, racial and ethnic backgrounds. 
  • Ability to maintain professional demeanor while exercising judgment and discretion in work.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and professional journals.
  • Ability to write reports and correspondence.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel, as well as the ability to become proficient in other software packages and programs.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to attend required Agency trainings and maintain necessary training compliance. Flexibility to attend daytime trainings or sessions outside of regularly scheduled hours.

  • Willingness to be flexible with hours based on the needs of the program and schedule.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Be responsible for the educational assessment of Youth seeking placement in designated homes.
  • Be responsible for the educational progress and growth of Youth to ensure Youth’s investment in education.
  • Work collaboratively with youth, family, Program and Department teams to case plan Youth’s goals related to their educational needs.
  • Attend weekly Program staff meetings to maintain clear and direct communication for Youth’s educational needs.
  • Assist youth in program in preparation for high school entrance tests, ACT/SAT tests, and GED programs/tests.
  • Proctor education assessments and interpret results.
  • Professionally represent and communicate the program/Agency with external school partnerships.
  • Research school placement options, as necessary.
  • Complete proper Agency forms and education reports as necessary.
  • Interpret transcripts, grade reports and behavioral/attendance reports.
  • Analyze IEP documents (if applicable) and provide educational supports.
  • Maintain educational records for each Youth's file.
  • Continually assess Youth’s educational records and to ensure that resources are available and/or being requested to meet Youth needs
  • Ensure direct communication with the Department team and Program staff for timely daily notification of a youth’s availability for tutoring.
  • Maintain a calendar of events that may impact a youth’s availability for tutoring.
  • Maintain confidentiality of Youth when working with tutors.
  • Work two evenings a week to assist during tutoring and study time.
  • Teach executive functions classes to youth and ensure that strategies are implemented to support each youth.
  • Support 8th grade youth in identification of High School options and enroll in a High School
  • Monitor grades and homework completion.
  • Work with supervisor to purposefully analyze and use data to support educational goals of each youth.
  • Collaborate with post-secondary options team to provide exposure opportunities for youth.
  • Plan out youth school transportation needs and provide transportation coverage as needed.
  • Participate in the milieu, as needed, with education being the primary focus of intervention.
  • Participate as a team member in program, coach, and teacher with Youth.
  • Be aware of the education climate, nationally and in Chicago, and how it affects Youth in program.
  • Work collaboratively with the Care Managers on Community Care team, once a Youth transitions out of program.
  • Employ all aspects of de-escalation and behavior management techniques as outlined in CPI protocol.
  • Learn, align with, and execute the treatment philosophies, modalities and practices of the Agency.
