Job Summary: The Fleet Maintenance Technician is responsible for inspecting company equipment daily, able to do miscellaneous minor repairs to chassis and vehicles within the fleet to ensure they remain in safe and operational condition. This role involves performing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting mechanical issues, and completing repairs to minimize downtime and maximize vehicle reliability. The Fleet Maintenance Technician works closely with drivers, vendors, Safety Director and Dispatch staff to maintain a well-functioning and efficient fleet operation.

Responsibilities:
  1. Vehicle Inspections: Perform daily inspections of fleet vehicles and company equipment to identify signs of wear, damage, or mechanical issues. Check fluid levels, tire pressure, brakes, steering, and other critical components to ensure vehicles are safe and compliant with regulations.
  2. Preventive Maintenance: Follow maintenance schedules and procedures to schedule preventive maintenance tasks such as oil changes, filter replacements, lubrication, and fluid checks. Conduct scheduled services to extend the lifespan of vehicles and prevent unexpected breakdowns.
  3. Diagnostic Testing: Use diagnostic tools and equipment to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and electronic systems in fleet vehicles. Identify the root causes of problems and recommend appropriate repairs or replacements to restore vehicle functionality.
  4. Repair and Maintenance: Be able to replace minor worn or damaged parts, components, and systems to ensure vehicles/equipment operate safely and efficiently. Adhere to manufacturer specifications and industry standards for quality and safety.
  5. Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, and parts inventory using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) or other tracking tools. Document work performed, parts used, and labor hours.
  6. Safety Compliance: Ensure fleet vehicles comply with safety regulations, emissions standards, and company policies. Conduct safety inspections and address any issues promptly to mitigate risks and maintain compliance with regulatory requirements.
  7. Training and Development: Stay updated on new technologies, diagnostic methods, and maintenance techniques through training programs, workshops, and industry publications. Share knowledge and expertise with other maintenance staff to improve overall team performance.
  8. Emergency Response: Respond to emergency repair calls and breakdowns to quickly assess and address vehicle issues. Prioritize repairs based on urgency and availability of resources to minimize disruptions to fleet operations.

Requirements:
  1. High school diploma or equivalent; technical certification or vocational training in automotive technology preferred.
  2. Previous experience as a fleet maintenance technician or automotive mechanic, preferably in a fleet management or transportation environment.
  3. Strong knowledge of vehicle systems, including engines, transmissions, brakes, electrical systems, and computerized controls.
  4. Proficiency in diagnostic tools, equipment, and software used for vehicle maintenance and repair.
  5. Ability to interpret technical manuals, diagrams, and schematics to diagnose and repair vehicle problems.
  6. Excellent troubleshooting skills and attention to detail.
  7. Physical stamina and dexterity to perform manual labor and work in various weather conditions.
  8. Effective communication and teamwork skills.

Working Conditions:
  • Work is typically performed at our drop yard or warehouse.
  • May involve exposure to noise, fumes, and hazardous materials.
  • May require occasional overtime, evening, and rotating weekend calls to assist drivers with breakdowns and roadside repairs.
