Phillips Academy seeks a full-time Rink Operator who will be responsible for ensuring that the ice surface is properly prepared for use at the designated times. They will assist with the maintenance of the buildings and building systems, function and special event preparation and other tasks essential to the smooth operation of the facilities. They will assist with other business operations such as pro shop sales and service, and program administration. They will take pride in the quality of the facilities, programs and services that we offer, ensuring that our customers enjoy a clean, safe, attractive and friendly environment. You must work your scheduled hours/shift unless manager/supervisor approves any changes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Will prepare (resurface) the ice for use in a timely and efficient manner ensuring a clean and safe ice surface for each use.
  • Will assist with the maintenance of the ice surface including edging, flooding, grooming and shaving and will perform these duties on a regular basis.
  • Will ensure that the building, including locker rooms, rest rooms and common areas, are kept clean at all times; will perform janitorial duties on a regular basis.
  • Will assist with the installation of the ice surface, as needed.
  • Will monitor the refrigeration equipment, HVAC, dehumidification and other building systems and ensure that they are operating properly and efficiently; will accurately record all relevant information.
  • Will monitor the operation of ice resurfacing machine and will perform regular maintenance or repairs, as needed.
  • Will serve as a pro shop attendant, responsible for product sales and inventory, skate sharpening and repair, locker room assignments and other needed tasks. Ensure that there is accurate operation and recordkeeping of cash registers.
  • Will assist with program administration including customer registration, daily check-in and activity supervision.
  • Will regularly respond to customer inquiries and needs, monitor email accounts, answer phone and communicate regularly with patrons, visitors and employees.
  • Will ensure that rink policies and schedules are adhered to by communicating with patrons and visitors.
  • Will interact with faculty, students, staff, vendors and occasionally Trustees of Phillips Academy.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Will be required to collect fees from patrons or user groups.
  • Will be required to shovel show and operate a snow blower.
  • May serve as a skating and/or hockey instructor.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Rink Supervisor.

Qualification Requirements: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required to perform these essential duties. This list is intended to be illustrative, but not exhaustive.

Preferred Experience:

  • A general knowledge of equipment and building maintenance is required.
  • A general knowledge of computer equipment and use of email is required.
  • Hold a valid driver’s license required.
  • Hold or willing to obtain a Certified Ice Technician or similar training certificate.
  • Hold or willing to obtain First Aid and CPR certificate.
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of an ice resurfacing machine preferred.
  • Knowledge of the operation of a refrigeration plant helpful.
  • Proficient ice skater with background in hockey and/or figure skating.

Communication Skills:

Excellent customer service skills with the ability to communicate effectively with others are preferred.

Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

  • The employee has to work in a cold environment (ice skating rink).
  • The employee must use extraordinary care while working on an ice surface.

Protective Equipment: Warm and water-resistant clothing.

Physical Ability Standards:

  • Ability to shovel snow while standing on the ice surface.
  • Ability to stand, squat or kneel in static, bent postures from 5 minutes up to 20 minutes continuous duration on an occasional basis.
  • Ability to walk for up to 40 feet on a repetitive basis and climb up to 20 steps on an occasional basis.
  • Ability to lift up to 60 pounds individually and up to 100 pounds with assistance, 0-42 inch height range, on an occasional to frequent basis.
  • Ability to carry up to 30 to 35 pounds, at waist level for up to 25 feet on an occasional to frequent basis.
  • Ability to push and pull with arms, in 6-60 inch height range against resistances up to 50 pounds on an occasional basis.
  • Ability to extend reach with both arms, from floor level to overhead, handling up to 40 pounds on an occasional basis.
  • Ability to manipulate small parts, machine controls and various hand tools on a frequent basis.
