Job description

Shared Ice Services (โ€œSISโ€), provide essential support services to both of our two operating companies โ€“ Nichols Brothers Boat Builders and Everett Ship Repair. ย SIS, together these two operating companies comprise the heft and might of Ice Cap Holdingsโ€™ presence in the Pacific Northwest maritime community.

We are seeking an experiencedย Marine Piping Engineer responsible for current and anticipated needs in the Shipyardโ€™s contracted work in both new construction as well as overhaul projects.ย  Reporting to the Director of Engineering, you will be a key interface between the Engineering Department, external design consultants, and our shop floor in assuring supply and distribution of current and accurate drawings and documents to production trades tasked with executing construction.ย ย 

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Perform basic design, production design, and field engineering activities as required by the department workload.
  • Interface with Planning, Procurement, Engineering, design subcontractors, and Production personnel as required to complete their assigned activities.
    Prepare and create clear, complete, and accurate plans and detail drawings from rough or detailed sketches/notes, contract changes and/or bid specifications.
  • Develop production design work package documentation, such as workshop drawing, assembly drawings, panel line milling and cutting information for release to production.
  • Provide field engineering support as required to support production activities, blue mark inspections or responding to production questions developed throughout construction of the ship.
  • Specify and/or source piping equipment to be installed onboard vessels, noting that value to the customer and the shipyard is important,
  • Develop production level piping schematics and routing plans.
  • Provide system layout & design, including third party product integration.
  • Support the development of standard processes, procedures, and designs as it pertains to piping systems.
  • Validate system designs.
  • Acts as liaison with outside engineers who provide structural, electrical, and mechanical designs for projects, ensuring that BMIโ€™s NBBB drawings reflect the engineerโ€™s design intentions.
  • Creates construction and fabrication drawings in accordance with company standards and design engineerโ€™s directions and specifications.
  • Utilizes knowledge of various machines, engineering practices, mathematics, building materials, and other physical sciences to complete drawings.
  • Make any adjustments or changes necessary or desired.
  • Collaborate with the project team to develop piping material specifications, including valves, fittings, and materials.
  • Review and approve vendor drawings and specifications for purchased equipment packages where piping is part of the package.
  • Ensure that designs meet safety, operability, maintainability, and constructability requirements.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in marine engineering, or similar degree
  • A minimum of 3 yearsโ€™ experience in marine industry, specifically in the design and detail production design of ship and/or boat systems
  • Proficient knowledge of:
    • Proficient in AutoCAD
    • Rhinoceros - Navisworks
    • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Knowledge of and experience with marine piping systems
  • Ability to operate within a budget, both hours and material costs
  • Capability to read and understand technical documentation and the vessel specifications.
  • Knowledge of how to professionally design a shipโ€™s piping systems with consideration of electrical, HVAC, structural and outfitting interferences.
  • Ability to meet and professionally engage with customers, production, and sales staff in an office environment working out details, equipment selection and placement, and other information required to systems to fit the vessel.

Preferred Requirements:

  • AutoCAD
  • Rhinoceros experience is a plus.
  • Knowledge of 46 CFR and ABS regulations
