Job Description

Primary Position Objectives

The UWC-USA program - a two-year experience that integrates our Academic, Co-curricular, and Residential curricula - prepares students to serve as catalysts for greater unity, peace and sustainability in the world. We support students in the practice of our mission during their two years on campus and challenge them to live our mission for a lifetime. The Basecamp Coordinator, a member of the school's Student Life team, contributes to the school's mission across our full program, focusing on personal, campus and environmental sustainability.

In the area of personal sustainability, the Basecamp Coordinator collaborates with the health team to deliver the wellness curriculum including support of mental and physical health programming, including the options for physical activities; serves as a co-sponsor of a Peer Advocacy team; organizes wellness training for student life team members, faculty/staff and students; collaborates with faculty/staff to ensure all program implementation addresses wellness concerns; and manages external partnerships that advance wellness within the school community.

In the areas of campus and environmental sustainability, the Basecamp Coordinator is responsible for the logistical back-end of UWC-USA's Basecamp program, through which students participate in the operation of our campus, including registration, coordination with sponsors, and credit completion. The Coordinator supports other programming areas in formal or informal ways. They fulfill their responsibilities in accord with the UWC mission and values as well as the school's strategic plan, foundational documents, IBDP authorization, ISAS accreditation and best practices in teaching and learning.

As the Get-Away Family program coordinator, the Basecamp Coordinator works to coordinate and support a Get Away Family committee for each year, to publicize the program, ensure background checks are being conducted, collect driver's insurance information, recruit and screen Get Away families, inform and recruit students about the program, design and host special Get Away events and acknowledgements, work with RCs to conduct home visits, maintain a list of families and students, and match students to placements for winter breaks, summer travel, and other times when hosts are needed.

The Basecamp Coordinator is employed on a 10-month agreement that runs from 1 August to 31 May and paid over the course of 12 months. Their summer and winter holiday travel plans should not interfere with their professional obligations at the beginning of August, mid December, early January, and late May.

Position Responsibilities

Personal sustainability within student life

  • Support integration of physical fitness in residential life
  • Support mental health, wellness, safety and information management needs in coordination with Dean of Student Life
  • With members of the Health Team, organize key wellness trainings for student life team members, peer advocacy leaders and all students, including but not limited to student mental health awareness and first aid, gender and sexual identity formation, sexual wellness, substance abuse prevention and addiction/harm reduction.
  • Provide additional data tracking and information management support for student life programs; where appropriate, utilize Powerschool and Schoology and other programs such as REACH
  • Supports the integration of the Integral Sustainability curriculum in student life
  • Collaborates with academic and experiential leaders to ensure wellness concerns are addressed appropriately during major events and school-sponsored trips
  • Coordinates wellness and sustainability components of Capstone curriculum through regular cohort meetings with students and appropriate employees
  • Curates and organizes resources for school-wide access

Campus sustainability integrated with Basecamp program administration

  • Working with Community Engagement Manager, ensure that Basecamp activities are scheduled within the co-curricular program
  • Ensure effective data tracking so that all students are on track to complete Basecamp program requirements
  • Coordinates with Senior Director of Operations and facilities teams as needed to ensure that campus operations are integrated with evolving Basecamp programming
  • Supports and co-sponsors sustainability and SWEET resident assistants as a program liaison with other faculty

Get Away Program Administration

  • Promote program so that all students who want Get Away families are able to be placed with one
  • Ensure all logistical steps are in place for safe and successful Get Away program administration
  • Together with Dean of Student Life, support the Get Away family committee to help with matching students, recruiting families, and event hosting
  • Assist with winter break and summer student placement as needed
  • Develop programming to acknowledge and appreciate Get Away families throughout the year

Program Integration & Collaboration

  • Supports faculty to co-lead biweekly learning expeditions as needed
  • Supports students to develop effective reflection towards IB CAS requirements for Basecamp activities (Activity and Service)
  • Develops and integrates the curriculum with our commitments to peacebuilding and integral sustainability, using Basecamp to foster intercultural--and interpersonal--dialogue in order to contribute to peaceful and just community
  • Participates in co-curricular team meetings
  • Writes periodic student reports as part of the school's formal evaluation process

UWC-USA Leadership

  • All UWC-USA employees are expected to provide varying levels of leadership in order to support the UWC mission. Examples include but are not limited to:
    • Actively participating and contributing to committee or task force assignments, providing leadership in campus-wide events or initiatives, strategic planning efforts, in the experiential education program, the dormitories, dining hall, and/or in physical plant initiatives.
    • Initiating strategic discussions and sharing thoughtful and innovative ideas with your co-workers for carrying out the UWC mission and successfully completing day to day work assignments.
    • Demonstrating a growth mindset by believing and acknowledging that intelligence, skills, learning and creativity can all grow with time and experience

    • Support safeguarding across program areas
    • Co-lead Experiential Learning trips as directed, including on Southwest Studies or Project Week each year

Position Qualifications

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience with social and emotional learning programming
  • Experience in residential and/or wellness education and an understanding of positive youth development
  • Strong technical and organizational skills, including administrative experience
  • Program development, delivery, and evaluation
  • Highly skilled in logistical systems, written communication, and data tracking
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
  • Collaborative leadership style that includes strong team-building skills.
  • Commitment to the mission of the school and the UWC movement
