The Fleet Mechanic position is responsible for performing routine and complex skilled mechanical work on fixed and rolling stock, automotive, construction, and specialized equipment. Under the direct supervision of the Fleet Manager and a supporting relationship with the Lead Fleet Mechanic, the role works on a variety of cars, construction equipment, trucks, specialized vehicles, generator engines, and more.


Hiring Range:

  • Maximum = Based on qualifications
  • Minimum = $49,427.94

Education and Experience

  • Education
    • Required: High School Diploma or equivalency
  • Experience
    • Required:
      • 5 years of experience in automotive or diesel and heavy equipment repairs
    • Preferred:
      • 7 years of experience in automotive or diesel and heavy equipment repairs

Licenses or Certifications

  • Required:
    • Valid NC Driver’s License
    • Valid NC CDL class B or ability to obtain within 6 months of start date
    • State Safety Inspection certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of start date
    • On Board Diagnosis II (OBDII) emission testing certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of the start date
    • Air Conditioning certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of start date

    Preferred:

    • ASE-certified Technician

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

    This job description intends to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

    • Performs complex diagnosis; adjusts, repairs, and services a variety of cars, construction equipment, trucks, specialized vehicles, generator engines, and related equipment.
    • Assists in developing predictive maintenance approaches and tasks.
    • Services vehicles and equipment and repairs and replaces gas and diesel-driven equipment parts.
    • Performs routine service work such as oil changes, lubrication, and tire repairs.
    • Checks suspension for proper wheel alignment; resurfaces brake drums; and relines brakes.
    • Repairs air conditioning systems and emission systems, fabricate parts, welds vehicles, signs, gates, mowing decks, and exhaust systems.
    • Performs state vehicle inspections on airport vehicles.
    • Performs diversified complex electrical work on vehicles and equipment using schematics and electrical testers.
    • Repairs mowers, leaf machines, and other specialized equipment.
    • Cleans shop area to always maintain a neat and professional shop appearance.
    • Decommissions retired vehicles and equipment for state surplus auction; removes electronic equipment, decals, and other specified equipment.
    • Performs on-call repairs, as needed.
    • Performs additional related work as required.
