Job Description

GENERAL COUNSELOR

About Us: Since 1989, HFH Summer Camps has provided NYC children experiencing homelessness with a summer camp experience. For more information about our summer camp program, please visit us at www.hfhcamps.org

Where: HFH Summer Camps are located an hour north of New York City, on the grounds of the 52,000-acre Harriman State Park. A lush preserve of woodland and lakes straddling New York’s Rockland and Orange counties, the park has over 200 miles of trails, 31 lakes and reservoirs, camping grounds, beaches, and an abundance of wildlife.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervision and Safety

  • Always ensure the safety and well-being of the children.
  • Supervise activities, including swimming, hiking, and games, to prevent accidents and injuries.
  • Be aware of any allergies, medical conditions, or special needs of the campers and provide appropriate accommodation.
  • Implement and enforce safety rules and emergency procedures consistently.

Emotional Support and Inclusivity

  • Address any conflicts or issues among campers promptly and in a fair manner.
  • Act as a positive role model by demonstrating empathy, patience, and kindness.
  • Encourage campers to build positive relationships and support their emotional well-being.

Activity Planning and Leadership

  • Organize and lead age-appropriate activities and games that promote physical activity, creativity, and social interaction.
  • Ensure that all campers can participate in activities and adapt plans as needed to accommodate diverse interests and abilities.
  • Teach campers important life skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, and respect for the environment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Desire to work and live outdoors from June 18th - August 9th, 2024.
  • Ability to pass a background check, physical exam and be up to date on all required immunizations.
  • An understanding of and liking of children; knowledge of behavioral issues a plus.
  • Ability to work in a team setting.

ADDITIONAL ITEMS NEEDED:

  • Three letters of reference
  • A physical exam by a licensed Medical Doctor and be up to date with all required immunizations.
  • Additional special skills and certifications (First Aid, CPR, EMT, and others) are a plus.

2024 CAMP DATES:

  • Tuesday June 11th: Administration & EMT’s Start Day
  • Wednesday June 12th: Camp Power Start Day
  • Friday June 14th: Lifeguards & Unit Leaders Start Day
  • Tuesday June 18th: General Counselors & Activity Specialist Start Day
  • Friday August 9th: Last Day for all Staff

As per the order of the Commissioner of the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, all HFH Camps employees MUST provide proof of having received a COVID-19 vaccine. In addition, all staff must have documented their MMR immunization with month, day, and year. Two shots must be documented.
