Job Description:

The Building Information Modeling (BIM) Lead focuses on authoring, maintaining, and implementing of BIM Standards and organization wide workflows. Collaborate with project planners, designers, engineers, and other Project Team members to support complex design projects in the heat transfer and power generation industry. Identifies and assists in creating digital assets to enhance standard libraries.

Formal Policy Setting Responsibilities:

Responsible for setting policies associated with the BIM modeler’s purpose and responsibilities and providing input on policies concerning the plant piping and steel design software.

Routine Decision Making / Problem Solving:

  • Provide leadership to ensure that BIM policies/procedures/standards are properly implemented and maintained throughout the course of a project.
  • Resource management with BIM Modelers to maintain Project Schedule and quality of work.
  • Works with Layout Design Coordinators to make individual project decisions.
  • Works with CAD Development to make decisions related to software and tools.
  • Analyse BIM Modeler performance and BIM usage reports to identify areas where training or assistance may be required. Provide continuous coaching to build upon their existing strengths and identify undesirable behaviours as opportunities for personal / professional development.

  • BIM Discipline Coordinators
  • BIM Modelers

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Focus the BIM groups’ effort to collaborate with Project teams to coordinate design details and material BOMs to meet procurement, fabrication, and delivery requirements/milestones. (55% of time)
  • Perform all aspects of ongoing performance management to encourage employees to perform to their full potential. (15% of time)
  • Manage the organization-wide implementation of BIM–supporting software, BIM Standards/workflows, and research of new BIM-related software. (15% of time)
  • Management/development of BIM software and department processes that improve project quality, versatility, and helps facilitate communication with project team. (15% of time)

Qualifications

Required knowledge:

  • Knowledge of good engineering and drafting practices, specifically within the 3D modeling and presentation of piping and structural steel details and data. Construction and fabrication knowledge is a plus.
  • Knowledge around data analysis, visualization, and management and the communication associated, I.e., verbal, written or visual. SQL and Access database knowledge is a plus.

Using this skill to set one’s own day to day schedule and proceed with little to no direction. Clear communication of the priorities to the team so that everyone knows what tasks need to be completed and when.

  • Must be able to work in a changing and fluid environment. Must have and open mindset to feedback and differing opinions to apply flexible and adaptable solutions.

Communication Skills/Emotional Intelligence

  • Must have excellent communication skills and be able to manage and motivate a diverse group of team members. Be able to understand each team members different perspectives in finding common ground and manage conflict effectively and efficiently.

Diligent

  • Must be diligent in your work, meaning paying attention to detail and following instructions carefully. It also means being organized and to keep track of tasks. This keeps the project on time and within budget.

Travel by air/car less than 5%.

Formal Education:

  • Technical or vocational school education, Junior College / two-year college training or Four-year college education

Experience:

  • 5+ years, some management experience preferred.
