How much do environmental modeler jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 26, 2026, the average yearly pay for environmental modeler in the United States is $97,166.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $90,000.00 and $105,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are Environmental Modelers?

Environmental Modelers are professionals who use mathematical, statistical, and computational techniques to simulate and predict environmental processes. They create models to understand issues such as air and water pollution, climate change, and ecosystem dynamics. These models help policymakers and researchers assess the impact of human activity on the environment and develop strategies for sustainable management. Environmental Modelers often work with large datasets, collaborate with scientists from various fields, and use specialized software for their analyses.

What is the difference between Environmental Modeler vs Environmental Scientist?

AspectEnvironmental ModelerEnvironmental Scientist
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Environmental Science, Geography, or related fields; often requires modeling software proficiencyBachelor's or Master's in Environmental Science, Ecology, or related fields; may include research experience
Work EnvironmentPrimarily office-based, using computer models and GIS toolsFieldwork and laboratory work, along with data analysis
Employer & IndustryGovernment agencies, consulting firms, environmental NGOsResearch institutions, government agencies, environmental consulting

Environmental Modelers focus on creating computer simulations to predict environmental changes, while Environmental Scientists conduct field research and analyze environmental data. Both roles often collaborate but differ mainly in their methods and daily tasks.

What are some common challenges Environmental Modelers face when working with large datasets?

Environmental Modelers often work with complex and large-scale datasets, which can present challenges such as data inconsistency, gaps in historical information, and computational limitations. Ensuring data quality and integrating information from multiple sources (like satellite imagery, field measurements, and climate models) requires strong analytical and programming skills. Collaborating with data scientists, ecologists, and policy experts is common to validate models and interpret results, making communication and teamwork essential for overcoming these challenges.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Environmental Modeler, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Environmental Modeler, you need a strong background in environmental science, mathematics, and data analysis, usually supported by a relevant degree such as environmental engineering or applied mathematics. Familiarity with modeling software like MATLAB, ArcGIS, or SWAT, and knowledge of programming languages such as Python or R are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for interpreting data and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams. These competencies ensure accurate environmental predictions, support regulatory compliance, and drive impactful decision-making in addressing environmental challenges.

Job Description
Welcome to Olsson's Industrial Environmental team, where innovation meets sustainability in the industrial sector. As an Engineer or Scientist, you will be part of a team that tackles complex environmental challenges across diverse industries such as mining, agriculture, transportation, and advanced manufacturing.
As a Noise and Environmental Modeling Specialist, you will support environmental compliance and planning efforts through the application of noise modeling, air dispersion modeling, and/or AutoCAD-based analysis tools. You will prepare technical analyses and reports, perform regulatory and technical evaluations, and assist with environmental permitting and compliance projects.
While experience with noise modeling is preferred, candidates with air quality modeling, AutoCAD, or other quantitative modeling experience will be well positioned to succeed in this role and expand into noise modeling applications.
This role offers an excellent opportunity to apply your modeling and analytical skills to a variety of environmental projects, contributing to regulatory compliance and the sustainable development of infrastructure and industrial sites.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Perform noise modeling and analysis for industrial, infrastructure, or environmental projects.
  • Support air quality modeling and environmental compliance projects, as needed.
  • Develop and manage modeling inputs using GIS, AutoCAD, and other data sources.
  • Assist in preparing technical reports and documentation for permits and compliance measures.
  • Work on environmental modeling / compliance projects and ensure adherence to project scope and schedule.
  • Support small-scale project management, including monitoring timelines, budgets, and scope under the guidance of senior staff.

Qualifications
You are passionate about:
  • Working collaboratively with others.
  • Having ownership in the work you do.
  • Using your talents to positively affect communities.

You bring to the team:
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to contribute and work well with a team.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, Acoustics, Physics, or a related field.
  • 2 to 5 years of professional experience in environmental modeling, air quality, or a related technical field.
  • Experience with one or more of the following:
    • Noise modeling software (e.g., SoundPLAN)
    • Air dispersion modeling (e.g., AERMOD)
  • AutoCAD or GIS tools for spatial analysis and modeling support.
  • Familiarity with environmental regulations and regulatory processes (e.g., noise ordinances, Clean Air Act programs).
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with clients, contractors, and team members.
  • Experience supporting environmental consulting projects and working with multidisciplinary teams.
