The Human Relations Officer is responsible for administering the Human Relations Ordinance pertaining to anti-discrimination in housing, employment, and public accommodations. Implementing and facilitating various programs is required. This employee should possess excellent communication, organizational, and public relation skills; and demonstrate working knowledge and experience with multi-cultural competency.

A Day in the Life

  • Investigations: Administers the Human Relations Ordinance pertaining to anti-discrimination for the City of Hutchinson; Receives complaints, cases, and seeks to mediate those cases when appropriate. Assists complainants desiring an official investigation through the process of filing with the Kansas Human Rights Commission.
  • Inclusion Strategies: Design and implement programs that promote inclusion and belonging, ensuring that all community members feel valued and heard.
  • Plans and facilitates community education, outreach programs, and special projects initiated by the Human Relations Commission.
  • Policy: Researches, designs, develops, and implements policies, projects, and programs for the City Council, City Manager, and the Human Relations Commission.
  • Performs research and analysis and compiles and collects data for Human Relations projects.
  • Collaboration: work closely with local organizations, businesses, and community leaders to foster collaboration and partnerships that enhance inclusion efforts.
  • Education and Outreach: Provide educational opportunities and resources to promote understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures, perspectives, and identities. Plans and facilitates special projects initiated by the Human Relations Commission.

What you will need for success:

Education: A Bachelor's degree in Public Administration, Human Resources, Psychology, Legal Administration, or a related field is required.

Experience: A minimum of one (1) year of similar or related experience is required. Employee is expected to acquire the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well within six months of employment.

Certifications/License: Valid Kansas driver's license is required.
