JOB DESCRIPTION

Title: Food Technologist Department: R&D

Status: Full Time, Exempt

Reports to: R&D Manager Effective Date: July 2022


Summary of Position:

This position focuses on accurately preparing various product samples based on internal needs or external requests for new product development and product improvement projects. As well, the position will focus on supporting the R&D Manager with preparing notes for pre-production meetings, attending first production runs as part of the commercialization and product transfer process.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Prepare test samples of new product formulations and make fine tune adjustments necessary to prepare the product for market
  • Test the products under variable conditions (i.e. different ovens, frozen and fresh, etc.), including shelf-life testing and record keeping of experimental design
  • Process new formulas into proper sample labels and nutritional analysis per internal and external requirements
  • Assist R&D Manager by preparing pre-production notes for cross functional review prior to running new products in the plant or transferring of products to new areas
  • Create QA specifications for new or improved products. These are to include QA details such as proper make-up, handling, and testing procedures. Specifications must also include key operations details.
  • Improve existing products by changing or refining ingredients or manufacturing processes (i.e. improve product yield)
  • Conduct testing of new raw materials from prospective vendors
  • Maintain detailed and accurate documentation of all work performed and prepare summaries and reports
  • Learn bartender label system and ink jet system to support and be a backup to R&D support specialist.
  • Enter data into customer portals to be reviewed by Support Specialist or Manager.
  • Enter formulas into nutritional database to create label and specification information.
  • Create tentative specifications to be reviewed by Support Specialist or Manager.
  • Create finished product specifications for uploading into customer portals.
  • Maintain familiarity with current scientific literature and trade journals
  • Assist in calibrating and maintaining lab equipment
  • Perform any miscellaneous functions requested by the R&D Manager, which may include covering other areas in the event of personnel shortages
  • Must be willing and able to work and accept varying shifts and schedules

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Food Science and/or Culinary Arts (Culinology®)
  • Minimum of 3+ years’ baking experience with a wide range of products
  • Strong ability to work autonomously
  • Ability to understand and communicate effectively in English, both written and oral
  • Consistently demonstrate a high level of professionalism with internal and external customers

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Basic computer skills to include use of Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Word & Excel)
  • Experience in large scale food preparation
  • Proven ability to be proactive, self-starter capable of adapting to rapidly changing priorities and performing in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience in quality assurance
  • Experience in a lab setting in the food industry
  • Detail oriented
  • Ingredient knowledge/functionality

Physical & Environmental Requirements:

  • Ability to bend, lift and carry up to 50lbs
  • Ability to work for brief periods in the freezer

Normal work schedule is:

  • Monday-Thursday 7:30am – 4:30pm
  • Friday 8am-3pm
  • Must be able to work overtime or added days as the needs of the business dictate the work schedule.
