Job Description

SUMMARY & ROLE:The Director of the Counseling Programs at the Townsend Institute is responsible for administrative oversight, faculty coordination, maintaining program and accreditation standards, overseeing the practicum and internship requirements, and various university activities related to the Townsend Institute Counseling Programs at Concordia University Irvine.


APPOINTMENT:

  • Recommended by the Dean of the Townsend Institute
  • Approved by the Executive Vice President/Provost

STAFF RELATIONSHIPS:

  • Reports to the Assistant Dean(AD) of the Townsend Institute
  • All Subject Matter Experts (SME's) within the academic programs of the Townsend Institute
  • All full time and adjunct faculty within the academic programs of the Counseling Department
  • Supervises other administrative weightload positions within the counseling program such as practicum coordinator, assistant director or coordinators

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: A terminal degree PhD or EdD ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The following are the minimum requirements for this position:

  • A faculty member in good standing for a minimum of 5 years.
  • A terminal degree in Counselor Education (EDD or PhD).
  • Licensure in Mental Health Counseling or Licensed Professional Counselor (or equivalent CACREP approved licensure for Counseling Director Position)
  • A minimum of 10 years of clinical experience.
  • A minimum of 5 years administrative experience.
  • Preferred understanding and experience in using the Townsend model in a clinical setting ( summary of Dr. Townsend's model available on request) or willingness for training in the model

PROGRAM RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities involve but are not limited to:

  • Works with the AD assists tp ensure all program(s) components are aligned to the Institute and University's mission, as well as appropriate WUSCUS and CACREP standards.
  • In collaboration with the Residency Committee, assist in coordination of the annual Residency experiences for the Counseling Program(s).
  • Supervises the Field Coordinator who manages all practicum and internship sites, to include recruitment and vetting, training of site supervisors and students, managing reporting of hours, and maintaining records for a program with national reach, for both the MA and PhD programs.
  • Supervises the Student Development committee and faculty supporting students on development plans or dispositional concerns, in both the MA and PhD programs.
  • Supervises the development, curriculum, personnel, and accreditation of the PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision program.
  • Supervises and coordinates term starts including book lists, new faculty on-boarding, communication with students and faculty, course start procedures, term shell creation in the University LMS.
  • Is a resource to faculty and students and monitors courses throughout the term regarding issues with technology, curriculum or other faculty and student concerns.
  • Assists in faculty evaluation with the AD.
  • Oversees creation, edits and maintains all program handbooks in both the MA and PhD programs
  • Coordinates program schedules with the Program Assistant, Program Academic Advisor and Registrar.
  • Works cooperatively with the Academic Advising office to oversee student progress and course sequencing
  • With the Program Academic Advisor, monitors retention of current students, especially during the registration periods.
  • Oversee the creation and implementation of all annual assessment data and analysis, to include student academic and dispositional markers
  • Provides direction and assists in resolution of student or faculty issues.
  • With the Program Assistant help to maintain faculty weight load sheets and contracts.
  • In collaboration with the AD, assist in the coordination of any faculty training.
  • Leads the creation and assumes the maintenance of the course catalog information reported to the university.
