Description
RETTEW is looking for a highly motivated entry to junior level Geoscientist (Geologist or Civil Engineer) or Resident Project Representative (Geotechnical Construction Inspector) to join our Environmental and Geotechnology (E&G) Practice. This individual will assist the Team Leads (Group Managers), Project Managers, and Geotechnical Engineers on existing and anticipated design engineering and/or construction projects within RETTEW's Environmental and Geotechnology Practice, primarily within the Tri-State Area. Additionally, cross-training in the GeoEnvironmental and Geophysical Disciplines is planned.
Locations: Pittsburgh, PA; Akron-Canton, OH; Morgantown, WV
Work Environment: In-office with hybrid options available after six months
Responsibilities (Geotechnical):
- Perform drilling inspection inclusive of geotechnical borehole logging, borehole log preparation utilizing gINT software, and laboratory sample selection and chain-of-custody (COC) preparation for laboratory testing in support of Geotechnical engineering investigations.
- Perform test pit installation inspection inclusive of test pit logging, test pit log preparation utilizing gINT software, and photo documentation (and associated photo-plates preparation) for shallow subgrade exploration projects related to landslide and/or proposed structure subgrade bearing evaluation.
- Perform preparation of geotechnical engineering report components inclusive of background soils, bedrock geology, and mining conditions.
- Perform site evaluations for landslide mitigation including completion of landslide evaluation forms for initial failure characterization and assessment of potential/existing impacts to existing and proposed infrastructure.
- Perform construction inspection related to oil and gas geotechnical engineering projects inclusive of, but not limited to, access roadway construction, midstream and upstream infrastructure (launcher/receiver pads, interconnect facilities, meter station pads, valve pads, pumping station pads, and/or compressor stations), and downstream infrastructure (well pads, temporary and permanent waste stockpiles, and surface water impoundments).
- Perform construction inspection related to traditional geotechnical engineering projects inclusive of, but not limited to, access roadway construction, residential development site construction, commercial and/or retail site development and construction, and retaining structures construction.
- Complete daily observation forms in support of the aforementioned construction.
Requirements:
- One to four years of experience in environmental consulting, geotechnical, and soil evaluations preferred; however, willing to train the right entry-level candidate
- A degree in Geology and/or related Civil Engineering is preferred. Specific coursework in Soils, Geology, Geotechnical Engineering, or Geophysics is a plus.
- Experience with laboratory testing methods of soils and/or bedrock is a plus.
- Construction Inspection experience, in lieu of formal coursework, will be considered.
- Desire to participate in multidisciplinary projects is preferred with eventual focus and concentration in the specific geotechnical discipline.
- Strong technical writing and communication skills.
- OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER training is a plus.
- Nuclear Densimeter training is a plus.
- Periodic overnight travel with moderately frequent project-specific extended travel is required.
- GIS, Word, Excel proficient; CADD experience a plus.
- Ability to lift 75 lbs.
