Job Description
The Palomar Health leadership team understands the dynamic challenges of the healthcare industry and the importance of training the next generation of healthcare leaders and therefor places great interest and dedication into developing aspiring talent. Project-based in nature, the Post-Doctoral Psychology Fellow will take part in active, hands-on substantive projects that foster development of verbal, interpersonal, and analytical skills and the opportunity to translate academic theory into practice. Objectives include, but are not limited to: Gain relevant work experience that effectively complements academic coursework and provides the Fellow with expanded understanding of hospital and health system operations; Develop administrative, organizational, managerial, and analytical skills; Develop an understanding of the organizational structure of Palomar Health; and to allow and enhance continuing education of the Fellow.
Palomar Health�s Behavioral Health Department offers Post-Doctoral Fellowships in Clinical Psychology. Fellows must have completed all requirements for the doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D) before beginning their post-doctoral training, and must have received their doctoral degree from an APA/CPA- accredited program or from a regionally accredited institution of higher education, including an APA/CPA accredited pre-doctoral internship or an internship meeting APPIC or CAPIC standards. Psychology training is provided at the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and the inpatient Behavioral Health Unit (BHU).
Fellows provide individual, family, and group psychotherapy utilizing evidence-based treatments (Psychodynamic, CBT, DBT, etc.) for adults and older adults with severe acute and persistent psychiatric disorders. Many of these patients are at risk for suicide, and may suffer from comorbid substance use disorders, personality disorders, and /or complicating medical conditions. Fellows will provide psychological assessment, testing, consultative services to psychiatry and other departments within the hospital system and to Board-and-Care Facilities, and educational outreach to the communities we serve. Fellows will participate in multi-disciplinary Treatment Planning Conferences, attend individual and group supervision with their primary supervisor, and attend weekly didactic seminar trainings facilitated by their primary supervising psychologist or the Clinical Director of Training. Scheduling flexibility may be required in order to provide psychology services on the weekends at the BHU. Speak and read English at a level that is sufficient to satisfactorily perform the essential functions of the position. Knowledge of standard office equipment (i.e., calculator, fax, photocopier) and personal computer and computer software skills (i.e., MS Windows, Excel, Access, Word, Power point, internet, e-mail). Windows computer skills including proficient use of keyboarding, use of mouse or keys for functions such as selecting items, use of drop down menus, scroll bars, opening folders, copying and similar operations required upon employment or within the 1st two weeks of employment to perform the essential functions of the job.
