Job Description: PAID SUMMER INTERNSHIPS (MULTIPLE) AVAILABLE AT HUMACYTE Humacyte, Inc. is bringing to market a once in a generation scientific technology platform, bioengineering readily available and universally implantable product opportunities focused on improving lives of patients and transforming the practice of medicine. Located in Durham, NC, the company develops and manufactures acellular tissues for the treatment of diseases and conditions across a wide range of therapeutic areas. The company’s innovative technology supports tissue repair, reconstruction, and replacement while overcoming limitations in existing standards of care. Initially developing a portfolio of human acellular vessels (HAVs), to target multiple vascular markets including trauma, arteriovenous access for hemodialysis, peripheral arterial disease, and coronary artery bypass grafting. Humacyte is also focused on the development of future markets such as pediatric heart surgery, delivery of cellular therapies, and multiple other novel cell and tissue systems. We are currently seeking individuals to fill the following PAID internships for Summer 2024. *****Please ensure that you provide the title for the internship you are seeking in your application.***** 1. INTERN, NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT (HISTOPATHOLOGY) Position Background: This Intern position is a research and development role within Humacyte’s New Product Development Team. The Intern will work under the guidance of a mentor and provide research assistance with ongoing assignments and new projects. They will work closely with other scientists and engineers on projects specifically tailored to further the individual’s understanding of career field opportunities, provide hands-on research experience, and further the development of Humacyte’s regenerative medicine pipeline. Specifically, this role will be responsible for characterizing human acellular vessel samples before and after implantation to characterize host cell response and tissue remodeling using histological methods. This position will require attention to detail, timeliness, self-motivation, professionalism, and adaptability to a fast-paced environment as well as effective communication and organization skills. Remote Work Designation: Onsite/Not Remote Major Accountabilities:Support new product development projects with both technical and organization assistance Perform laboratory research studies utilizing biomaterial and biomechanical techniques to design, develop, and optimize platforms for evaluating biomechanical properties of vascular graftsHelp maintain laboratory equipment, adherence to laboratory safety protocols, and inventory management of laboratory supplies through ordering and inventory organizationAssist members of the New Product Development team with experimental design, collection of data, and statistical interpretation of study results and conclusionsAttend and present research findings at team and department meetingsBe willing to learn new skills and support projects through other duties as assigned Specific Competencies:Prior experience with laboratory research projects, data analysis, and presentation of results is required Prior experience with biomaterials, cell biology, histology, tissue staining and imaging highly desirableExperience with scientific literature review, summarizing prior studies, and applying that knowledge to design, develop, and conduct experimental studies in the lab is also highly desirable. Experience with data analysis and graphical display with appropriate statistical methods is a plusExperience authoring and presenting scientific reports, technical specifications, and standard operating procedures is desirableFamiliarity with concepts in cardiovascular biology, regenerative medicine, biomaterials and tissue engineering a plus Qualifications:Current undergraduate or graduate student in a science or engineering discipline such as biology, biochemistry, or biomedical engineeringPrior laboratory research experience highly preferredFamiliarity with concepts and techniques related to biomaterials, tissue engineering, cardiovascular biology, cell and molecular biology such as biomaterial characterization, cell or protein based assay development, histology, standard or immunological staining, and microscopy. 2. INTERN, NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT (BIOMECHANICS) Position Background: This Intern position is a research and development role within Humacyte’s New Product Development Team. The Intern will work under the guidance of a mentor and provide research assistance with ongoing assignments and new projects. They will work closely with other scientists and engineers on projects specifically tailored to further the individual’s understanding of career field opportunities, provide hands-on research experience, and further the development of Humacyte’s regenerative medicine pipeline. Specifically, this role will be responsible for optimizing biomechanical characterization platforms and conducting biomechanical testing on tissue engineered and other vascular graft materials. This position will require attention to detail, timeliness, self-motivation, professionalism, and adaptability to a fast-paced environment as well as effective communication and organization skills. INTERN, DISCOVERY & PIPELINE (BIOVASCULAR PANCREAS) Position Background: This internship will require 20-40 hours a week, with flexibility to meet the demands of the intern. A desired start and end date of June 3, 2024 and end date of August 31, 2024 is preferred, but these dates are flexible pending the availability of the intern. At a minimum, two months are needed to complete this internship. The intern will have projects supporting the development of preclinical cell therapy products with a particular focus on the delivery of islets to treat Type I diabetes. The intern will be responsible for development of islet coating methods. The intern will also characterize features of the islets, including but not limited to insulin secretion, stem-like characteristics, and survival. The position will have a special emphasis on the development of biological hydrogels for coating cells onto vascular grafts. Remote Work Designation: Onsite/Not Remote Major Accountabilities: With the guidance and instruction of other senior scientists:Generate biological hydrogelsCulture pancreatic islets or pseudo islets made of min-6 clustersMicropipetting and assay developmentCell characterization by flow cytometery or ELISASupport of routine lab activities: autoclave surgery tools, maintain incubators, etc. according to SOPs Written documentation of activities Specific Competencies:Background in biomedical engineering and experience with biological hydrogels, preferredPrevious cell culture experience is strongly preferredAbility to make well-informed, independent judgementsStrong communication skills to facilitate interactions and interpret dataSkills in calculating and converting reagent concentrationsExceptional attention to detailKnowledge and experience in use and maintenance of common laboratory procedure and equipment Familiarity with Microsoft Office Software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) Qualifications:Progress towards a bachelor’s degree or higher in Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Biomedical, Bioengineering or Molecular Biology is required. Experience with cell culture, stem cell research, qPCR, ELISA, microscopy, flow cytometry, CAD, and 3D printing is a plus The ability to lift and hang a medium bag up to 20 lbs. on a stand over five-feet tall is required. 4. INTERN, DISCOVERY & PIPELINE (iPSC) Position Background: This internship will require 20-40 hours a week, with flexibility to meet the demands of the intern. A desired start and end date of June 3, 2024 and end date of August 31, 2024 is preferred, but these dates are flexible pending the availability of an intern. At a minimum, two months are needed to complete this internship. The intern will be responsible for the culture and differentiation of stem cells and pancreatic islets. The intern will also develop assays to test features of the islets, including but not limited to insulin secretion, stem-like characteristics, proliferation, and tumorgenicity. This position will work to support development of preclinical products related to cell therapy with a particular focus on the treatment of Type I diabetes. The position will have a special emphasis on the culture of stem cells and differentiation of these cells into insulin-producing cells. INTERN, MANUFACTURING PLANNING & SUPPORT TEAM Position Background: This position is for a 12 weeks, June - August 2024, internship for the Manufacturing Planning & Support (MPS) team in the Bioprocessing Department. This will be a full-time, temporary position. The intern will report to the MPS Lead. The intern will work closely with the MPS Team and cross-functional teams to support the day-to-day tracking/management of GMP documents/records (BPRs, Labels, Quality Events, CAPAs, Change Controls, Work Instructions, and SOPs) and manufacture schedule for the Bioprocessing department. This internship will provide the intern with the opportunity to practice multiple soft skills, specifically project management and team work skills and become familiar with GMP documents/records and scheduling processes required to support manufacturing operations. INTERN, QUALITY ASSURANCE Position Background:This position is for a 12-weeks, June – August 2024, internship for the Quality Assurance department. This will be a full-time, temporary position. The intern will report to the Director of Quality Assurance.The intern will work closely with Quality Assurance and Quality Systems teams to support the management of quality events and product disposition activities, metrics development and monitoring, and Inspection readiness activities. This internship will provide the intern with:Foundational knowledge of quality assurance principles and practices.Experience with Quality data management and reporting.Understanding of product disposition procedures and best practices.Proficiency in using Quality Management Systems.Valuable networking, teamwork, project management, and communication skills in a cutting-edge pharmaceutical company.
