Job Description: ASSISTANT CHAPLAIN

Assistant Chaplain summary: Esperanza Health Center, a Christ-centered, non-profit primary medical care clinic in Philadelphia, PA, seeks a qualified and committed professional as a part time Chaplain (16 hours/week). The Assistant Chaplain assists the Chaplain in helping guide and direct the spiritual formation of the staff and overall ministry; providing spiritual care and guidance to patients and staff; helping to form weekly devotional services for staff; and equipping managers to provide Christ-centered leadership to staff. The Assistant Chaplain functions include but are not limited to connecting patients to local churches; providing pastoral counseling to patients and staff and planning and participating in staff retreats; and helping to develop a spiritual formation plan for the organization. The Assistant Chaplain reports to the Lead Chaplain.

Responsibility details

  1. Staff spiritual care:
  • As needed, assist Chaplain in providing oversight for daily devotionals and prayer groups, ensuring broad participation and Biblical/doctrinal/spiritual depth (and leading devotions regularly);
  • Assist Chaplain in following up (by meeting, praying, counseling) on spiritual care for staff as the range of life issues occur;
  • As appropriate, help staff become involved in a local church.
  1. Patient spiritual care and outreach:
  • In collaboration with the Chaplain, oversee the Volunteer Chaplains who carry out spiritual care and outreach of patients (inside and outside clinic sites);
  • Help administer and teach in the periodic Volunteer Chaplain intensive training classes;
  • Participate regularly in visiting, interacting with, and praying for EHC patients on-site and, as needed, off-site (for the Assistant Chaplain, after an initial training period with the Chaplain, this will focus in particular in providing a presence at the K&A and 5th Street clinics);
  1. Special projects
  • In consultation with the Chaplain and as needed (and time permits), pursue to completion various special projects related to the EHC spiritual life.
  • Current special projects to be completed that the Assistant Chaplain may be involved in, time permitting: redesign of the current church directory for clinician use, researching and acquiring Christian evangelistic and discipleship materials, developing a corps of staff spiritual mentors, among others.

Administrative details

The Assistant Chaplain position is for 16 hours per week, to be carried out during no more than three regularly scheduled days per week. The Assistant Chaplain reports to the Chaplain.

Education, Skills and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree and/or 2-4 years of chaplaincy/pastoral care preferred. Ability to work with individuals from various faith and cultural backgrounds. Ability to maintain behavior and spiritual character that holds to Biblical principles. Active participation in a local Biblical Christian church. Bilingual in Spanish/English preferred.
