Position Summary: Lead the operations of the Trauma Hospital and Shelter Surgery teams championing AHS' core values of innovation, compassion and excellence. Lead high-performing teams while ensuring high levels of patient care. Oversee assignment and completion of duties and tasks, and staff training. Work with leadership and HR to identify, resolve and/ or escalate issues. Maintain open communication lines with Veterinarians, employees and AHS leadership. Identify challenges and areas for improvement and work with others to solve and implement positive changes. Minimize veterinarian, staff, and organizational liabilities. Work with DEA license holder to ensure adherence to DEA requirements for all control drugs. Work with premise holder to ensure clinic compliance for all Federal and State licensing.


Essential Duties:

  • Develop high-performing teams, increasing efficiency and minimizing complications.
  • Determine staffing needs and supervise hospital veterinary support staff including recruiting, interviewing, hiring, scheduling, training, coaching and counseling, payroll, performance appraisals and salary increase recommendations.
  • Address and resolve employee grievances, and employee relations issues with support from leadership and HR.
  • Work with team to develop individual development plans and goals.
  • Evaluate and update policies and procedures to keep the hospital in adherence to veterinary board requirements.
  • Prepare department budget and manage expenses within the budget.
  • Work with purchasing agent to purchase all medical equipment, supplies and drugs for clinic operations.
  • Compile and report daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly statistical data for the Director of Shelter Medicine as needed in a timely manner.
  • Respond to emergency calls from staff requiring authorization for treatment or transfer of animals to emergency medical facilities.
  • Regularly evaluate department staff, practices and procedures to determine need for improvement, revision and/or deletions.
  • Minimize AHS' liability in accordance with current Arizona State Statutes, local, state and federal standards.
  • Assist adopters with any post-adoption concerns or for any follow-up medical services required.
  • Formulate and offer medical related training for staff, be the administrator of all online training opportunities for staff.
  • Attend AHS leadership meetings and offer input on major decisions in other departments.
  • Research new ideas for improving operations and present recommendations to the Director of Shelter Medicine.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration preferred OR three to five years' management experience.
  • Three to five years' in a veterinary medicine role. Minimum 3 years veterinary technician or veterinary assistant experience.
  • Knowledge of AZ Premise and DEA requirements preferred.
  • Experience in an animal welfare organization preferred.
  • Must have excellent attention to detail, be able to solve complex problems with the ability to balance multiple priorities.
  • Able to flourish in a high-volume, fast-paced, ever-changing environment.
  • Possess excellent customer service and interpersonal skills, and be able to resolve conflict.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

Language - Able to speak, read, write and understand English. Spanish language helpful.

Mathematical - Able to develop budgets and estimate costs.

Technical - Above average proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook; able to learn other software programs as necessary.


Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Valid AZ driver's license.

Other:

Regular attendance and punctuality are required. Access to reliable transportation to visit all Arizona Humane Society sites and attend meetings as needed.


Work Environment / Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The work environment characteristics and physical demands described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job.
