MATERIALS SCIENCE CO-OP

The Fisher Barton Group consists of eight world-class manufacturing companies (nine facilities with 900+ employees) that produce a wide range of products for multiple industries, including bronze gear blanks, lawn mower blades, agricultural wear components, industrial blades, thermal spray coatings, oil and gas components, and medical devices. The newly developed Fisher Barton Technology Center (located in Watertown, Wisconsin) is the research and development headquarters that serves all divisions in the Fisher Barton Group. The Technology Center is responsible for the development of thermal spray and laser clad coatings, heat treating processes, and metallurgical analysis. Our commitment is simple: to research and develop material solutions and processes, and to deliver products that perform better for a longer duration.

The Fisher Barton Technology Center is looking for Materials Science Co-ops to work a full semester term from January through August or May through December. The Materials Science Co-op will support the research and development team by working in the metallurgical/mechanical testing lab and throughout the Fisher Barton Technology Center on assigned projects. The Co-op will gain experience in using and maintaining lab equipment, conducting and analyzing the results of lab tests, managing business-critical projects, and collaborating with engineering and cross-functional talent throughout the business.


ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

· Preparation of lab specimens, including saw cutting, surface grinding, mounting, and polishing

· Operate and conduct laboratory material tests, including macrohardness, microhardness, tensile and fatigue testing, impact toughness, wear resistance, scanning electron microscopy, optical emission spectroscopy, metallography, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray fluorescence

· Conduct and analyze heat treating and coating (thermal spray and laser cladding) experiments

· Inspect raw material during receiving

· Maintain and calibrate lab equipment

· Prepare lab reports, presentations, and communicate results with engineers or customers

· Coordinate projects with engineers and co-workers across businesses at Fisher Barton

· Complete additional projects and responsibilities as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

· Pursuing a Materials Science or other applicable 4 year degree

· Demonstrated ability to manage multiple and, at times, conflicting priorities

· Ability to communicate effectively and professionally within all areas of the business

· Proficiency in MS Office including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

· Strong analytical skills

· Ability to work in a team

· Ability to be self-directed and work independently

· Ability to multi-task

· Experience working with SolidWorks preferred

· Experience working in a manufacturing environment is a plus

· Prior Co-op experience focusing on Materials Science is a plus

· Ability to lift 50 lbs.

· Ability to wear proper personal protective equipment (earplugs, safety glasses, respirator)
