The Collection Development Librarian provides leadership in the areas of collections, technical services, and archives. Major responsibilities include the selection, evaluation, maintenance, and promotion of the Giovale Library’s collections based on data analysis, knowledge of university curricula, programs, research needs, and awareness of emerging trends in scholarly communication and publishing. Other responsibilities include the acquisition and cataloging of materials, management of the serials collection, and coordination of the thesis submission process. The Collection Development Librarian manages the Colleges Archives and Institutional Repository. This position supports student success by developing and maintaining a library collection that supports the college curriculum.


Responsibilities:

Collection Development

  1. Gather and analyze data to inform collection decisions and aid in collection promotion.
  2. Coordinate the selection activity of the liaison librarians.
  3. Lead the development of selection, management, and weeding policies.
  4. Serve as the database vendor liaison.
  5. Participate in other collection management activities such as serial weeding and database review and selection.
  6. Manage and coordinate the purchase, receipt, cataloging, and initial physical processing of new library acquisitions.
  7. Manage the Library’s gifts review.
  8. Serve on the Utah Academic Library Consortium (UALC) Collection Development Committee and represent the College’s interests in this and other consortia collection development efforts.

Technical Services

  1. Coordinate the Library’s serial holdings and oversee the maintenance of access to serials holdings information and accuracy via the catalog and Full Text Finder.
  2. Manage data regarding library materials acquisitions and budgets to assist in library work processes and decision making.
  3. Oversees the library’s cataloging policies and procedures.

Archives and Digital Repositories

  1. Manage and coordinate the Library’s digital collections and College archives.
  2. Maintain the thesis submission process.

Librarianship

  1. Serve as liaison to selected academic programs; Select materials for liaison schools and programs.
  2. Provide reference/research assistance and instruction to library users.
  3. Participate in Library staff business meetings and contribute to the planning, development, and assessment of Library-wide policies and services.
  4. Establish and sustain an ongoing service and scholarship record.
  5. Maintain current trends and developments in assigned areas of responsibility and the field of librarianship.
  6. Work evening and weekend hours, as needed.
  7. Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications:

Required

  • Master’s degree in Library/Information Science from an ALA accredited program plus three years of related work experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with collection development including reviewing, selecting and weeding serials, collections and databases.
  • Knowledge of digital collections and archival work.
  • Ability to negotiate contracts with library vendors.
  • Familiarity with cataloging and library systems and catalogs.
  • Demonstrated successful experience providing reference assistance.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and ability to work independently
  • Ability to work in a collaborative work environment and will have demonstrated success in working with diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated cultural sensitivity with respect for people of all backgrounds, experiences, and diverse perspectives.

Preferred

  • Experience in higher education is preferred.
  • Experience with information literacy instruction.
