Salary: $45,000 per year

Elementary Teacher (Grades K-6)

Salary: $45,000 per year, based on qualifications.

Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) Status:  Exempt Regular Full-Time 

Annual Days: 196

Start Date:  July 26, 2024

Minimum Requirements:  

***   Note that a teaching certificate/license is not required to teach at The Vanguard School   ***

  • Have a minimum of a bachelor's degree.
  • Pass Praxis 5901 series AND Praxis 5205 exam by the time of hire date (the Praxis Exams are not required for the interview).  The Vanguard School will reimburse you for the Praxis exam(s) if you are selected for the position.


Experience: Prior teaching experience preferred but not required.

General Purpose: The Elementary Teacher (K-6) is responsible for providing students with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to develop academic excellence, virtue, and leadership.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Faithfully implements instruction.
  • Delivers effective instruction.
  • Manages classroom climate and operation.
  • Promotes achievement.
  • Meets professional responsibilities.


Subject matter knowledge:

  • Reading:  theory, research, and practice; knowledge of the significant theories, practices, and programs for developing reading skills and reading comprehension; phonemic awareness and phonics:  principles, knowledge, and instructional practices; diagnosis and assessment of reading skills using standardized, criterion-referenced, and informal assessment instruments; development of a listening, speaking, and reading vocabulary.
  • Theories on the relationships between beginning writing and reading.
  • Writing:  Approaches and practices for developing skill in using writing tools; writing process and formal elements of writing; cursive.
  • English:  Children's and young adult literature; adult literature; classical and contemporary works; genres, literary elements, and literary techniques; nature, history, and structure of the English language: lexicon and grammar.
  • Mathematics:   Basic principles and concepts related to elementary school mathematics in the areas of number sense and numeration, patterns and functions, geometry and measurement, and data analysis.
  • History:  Major developments and figures in Colorado, U.S., and world history, with stress on Western civilization; basic economic principles and concepts; basic geographical principles and concepts; U.S. political principles, ideals, institutions, and processes, including their history and development.
  • Science:  Basic principles and concepts of the life sciences appropriate to the elementary school curriculum; basic principles and concepts of the physical sciences appropriate to the elementary school curriculum; principles and procedures of scientific inquiry; history of major scientific and technological discoveries or inventions; safety issues related to science labs and investigations.
