The Details

Start Date: Immediate Hire

Salary Range: $50-70,000 (depending on education and experience)

Reports To: Director of Academics

Language: Bilingual (English and Spanish), preferred

The Opportunity

The LAYC Career Academy is seeking a GED Science Teacher to play a pivotal role in educating older youth aged 16-30 focusing on GED science topics including earth, space, and physical science. This full-time position requires an experienced teacher with the ability to tailor lessons for a variety of learning needs including those with ELL and SPED requirements. The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor's degree, at least 2 years of relevant teaching experience, and bilingual abilities in English and Spanish. 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Work with a non-traditional student population of older youth, ages 16-30, utilizing relevant and restorative practices.
  • Uses data to inform lesson plans and instruction.
  • Plan instruction based on the GED science topics including earth and space, physical science/chemistry, and life science, assessing student readiness for the GED test.
  • Assess student progress based on different methods of evaluation and data sources.
  • Track student performance to adjust instruction and personalized learning plans. 
  • Provide lessons that differentiate instruction to all students and ensure compliance for ELL and SPED students.
  • Utilize technology on a regular and consistent basis to enhance instruction.
  • Collaborate with the GED team and the Academic Support Coordinator to track students’ progress and adjust instruction accordingly.
  • Submit lesson plans and other important documents and reports in a timely manner.
  • Analyze and use data to strengthen student achievement.
  • Participate in professional development and other staff activities.
The Skills You’ll Need

Success as an Instructor at LAYCCA requires a clear alignment to our mission, core values, and commitment to supporting older youth and young adults in obtaining their GED, industry training, and industry recognized certifications. 

Candidates must meet the following qualification to be considered for this role:

  • Bachelor's degree in science, secondary education, or a related field
  • Two or more years of experience teaching youth or adult learners

The ideal candidate will also bring most of the following skills, attributes and experiences:

  • Experience working with various opportunity youth including justice involved, foster children, ELL students, and students with special needs.
  • Can work independently and with little supervision.
  • Possesses the ability to make decisions based on data or factual evidence and observation.
  • Provide innovative instruction based on student needs.
  • Maintain a classroom environment based on principles of positive youth development and restorative justice practices.
  • Proficient in computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and Google Workspace.
  • Excellent attention to detail, paired with strong organizational, planning, and time management abilities.
  • Committed to the principles of positive youth development and equipped with robust interpersonal skills.
  • Fluency in both English and Spanish, preferred
The People

The GED Science Teacher will be a member of the academic team and reports to the Director of Academics. This person will also work closely with students, staff, and the broader community on a daily basis. As over 50% of our school population identifies as Latine or Hispanic, this person must be able to effectively communicate in both English and Spanish.
