DESCRIPTION
The Summer Camp Recreation Counselor ensures that campers with intellectual disability, ages 5-21, enjoy a positive, integrated camp experience in a safe, well-supervised and organized program for 6-7 weeks. Camp is held at Camp Courant in Farmington, CT, as well as within the community
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- Be a role model for campers with respect to personal care, understanding and following the rules, sportsmanlike conduct, participation in new and challenging activities and maintaining positive energy throughout the day
- Encourage campers to behave appropriately and intervene, when necessary, by applying individual behavioral guidelines
- Prepare for, and actively participate in, all camp activities including daily swimming, arts and crafts, sports, and educational planned assignments

- A quick learner who is able to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weakness of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problem
- Ability to maintain professionalism, composure and accountability in all situations, while still having fun and making the children smile
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with children
- Embraces diversity and is able to represent HARC in a positive and professional manner
- Takes initiative and displays creativity, energy and patience
ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION
Harc is a major provider of clinical and supportive services for people with intellectual disability and related challenges. Serving greater Hartford since 1951, Harc provides the full range of services from intermittent support to pervasive care. Services include early intervention through Connecticut's Birth-to-Three System, family support, year round recreation/respite, employment and adult day programs, behavioral health, residential, elderly and advocacy. Harc advocates for civil rights, supportive services throughout the lifetime, and quality of life for people with intellectual disability and their families.
Harc's programs have national accreditation and licenses. Though Harc has become a large multi-service organization, it retains a strong sense of family. The Board of Directors consists of committed community leaders including parents, adult siblings and self-advocates.
Harc's mission is to help individuals with intellectual disability and their families enjoy lives of quality, inclusion and dignity by providing support, education, and advocacy.
