Broadcast Engineer

General Job Description:

ABC57 and the CW25 in South Bend, Indiana have an immediate opening for a full-time Broadcast Engineer to join our growing office! Home to Michiana’s most decorated newscasts, we are looking for an eager problem-solver. Ideal candidates will either have previous broadcast or IT support experience.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Perform maintenance and emergency repairs of newsroom production equipment including cameras, video editors, audio mixers, lighting, mobile video transmitters (such as Dejero or TVu), and control room automation systems (such as iNews and Grass Valley Ignite). You will be working with an award-winning news team in a dynamic and fast-paced environment. No day will be the same and you will often work in the production control room and occasionally on remote broadcasts with your colleagues.
  • Maintain staff Windows workstations and networking; troubleshooting hardware and software issues with corporate IT departments using a helpdesk ticketing system. You will work in a collaborative environment to solve IT problems.
  • Ensure proper operation of broadcast TV transmission equipment – broadcast transmitter experience a plus but will train the right candidate. You will help deliver our viewers quality programming by Weigel National Networks, ABC, and the CW, with limited interruption.
  • Document equipment operation and create standard operating procedures. You will provide valuable technical guidance to our reporters, directors, and editors.
  • Update wiring and diagrams. You will help solve problems faster by ensuring equipment wiring is setup and properly documented.
  • Develop, build, and maintain media content workflows. You will help ensure our stories and programs are recorded, air, and are archived properly.
  • Minimize loss of service and colleague downtime during equipment failures. When problems arise, your problem-solving and collaboration skills will go into action quickly.
  • Innovate. You will help us explore and engage with emerging media technology.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Previous experience with broadcast technology; evaluating and repairing cameras, lights, microphones, tripods, and monitors.
  • Must have a solid understanding of Windows – Windows deployment and setting up new workstations a plus. Previous experience providing remote support and using a helpdesk ticketing system a plus. Experience with basic networking principles, such as TCP/IP, VPN, and VLANs, a strong plus.
  • Must be able to use a variety of broadcast equipment including but not limited to digital video cameras, computer graphics systems, non-linear video editors, video switchers, audio mixers, control room automation, and satellite receivers. Specific experience with iNews, Grass Valley Ignite, Grass Valley Stratus, Ross Xpression, TVu, and Dejero is a strong plus, but will train the right candidate on these specific systems.
  • Strong file management skills including file transfer and storage and an understanding of various video and audio formats.
  • Ability to learn RF transmitter operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting. Experience with Rhode & Schwartz transmitters a plus, will train the right candidate.
  • Good organization, attention to detail, and proactivity.
  • The ideal candidate must be a self-starter and have a great attitude.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and work independently.
  • Ability to guide, coach, and train colleagues.
  • Must be able to comprehend schematics, mechanical drawings and technical manuals and documents. The use of test equipment is required. Pulling and building cables including BNC, XLR, and Ethernet cable will be required.
  • Must be able to quickly learn new technologies and implement them into existing broadcast infrastructure.
