Job Description

The International African American Museum (IAAM) is seeking enthusiastic and dedicated individuals to join our team as Summer Camp Counselors. As a Summer Camp Counselor, you will have the opportunity to engage with children and immerse them in the rich history and culture of the African American experience. This position offers a unique opportunity to inspire the next generation through educational and interactive programming within the museum setting.

Responsibilities:

  1. Facilitate Educational Activities: Facilitate educational activities, workshops, and interactive sessions that explore various aspects of African American history, culture, and heritage.
  2. Supervise Campers: Provide guidance, supervision, and support to campers aged 8-14 throughout their camp experience, ensuring their safety and well-being at all times.
  3. Learn and Implement Curriculum: Learn and implement the curriculum and lesson plans designed by museum staff to adhere to the museum’s mission and educational goals.
  4. Promote Inclusivity and Diversity: Foster an inclusive and welcoming environment that celebrates diversity, encourages dialogue and promotes understanding of different perspectives and experiences.
  5. Assist with Tours and Activities: Assist museum staff with tours and hands-on activities, games, and crafts that engage campers and deepen their understanding of African American history and culture.
  6. Encourage Critical Thinking: Encourage critical thinking curiosity, and exploration among campers by facilitating discussions, asking thought-provoking questions, and encouraging active participation.
  7. Collaborate with Team: Work collaboratively with other camp counselors and museum staff to ensure smooth operation of camp activities, coordinate schedules, and address any issues or concerns that may arise.
  8. Communicate with Parents/Guardians: Maintain open and effective communication with parents/guardians regarding camper progress, behavior, and any important updates or information.
  9. Ensure Safety and Compliance: Adhere to all safety protocols, guidelines, and procedures to ensure the well-being of campers, staff, and visitors at all times.
  10. Provide Feedback: Offer constructive feedback and evaluation of camp activities, curriculum, and overall camper experience to contribute to continuous improvement and development of future programming.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Must have previous experience working with children in a camp, educational, or recreational setting preferred.
  • Passion for African American history, culture, and heritage, with a desire to share knowledge and inspire others.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to multitask and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • CPR and First Aid certification (preferred).
  • Background check will be required.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods standing and walking
  • Must be able to work in inclement weather
  • Must be able to bend, kneel, squat/stoop to perform tasks.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times.

Work authorization/security clearance requirements

The desired candidate must be eligible to work in the United States. IAAM does not provide sponsorship.

Duration: Camp sessions will run from MONDAY, JULY 1, 2024 – FRIDAY, JULY 26, 2024 from 8:30 AM-4:30 PM, including Thursday, July 4th.

MUST ALSO BE AVAILABLE FOR TRAINING ON SATURDAY, JUNE 1, 2024, SATURDAY, JUNE 15, 2024 AND MONDAY, JUNE 17, 2024.
